An exciting opportunity has arisen, to work within the Phlebotomy Department within Ambulatory Care Division within NUH, as a Service coordinator.

You must have excellent clinical knowledge of the phlebotomy service. You will need to be an effective communicator, be self-motivated and provide high standards of care.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will need to be fully competent in all aspects of venepuncture according to the Trust Venepuncture Policy and practice different approaches to the technique maintaining competency levels through annual reassessment protocols.

Provide supervision and guidance to members of the Phlebotomy Team. To plan and provide an efficient service, ensuring that appropriate staffing levels and professional standards are maintained at all times within the team. With the support of the Phlebotomy Service Lead, maintain accurate and up to date records of the team’s annual leave, sickness absence and other non-effective periods using the e-Rostering system. In absence of the Phlebotomy Service Lead, to work with other departments and to deputise for the Phlebotomy Service. Work closely with the other phlebotomists and liaise with members of the laboratory, nursing and medical staff working in the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Maintain inventory of supplies and reorder stock as required. Ensure stock rotation. Able to deal with challenging situations and exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances.

Working for our organisation

The Phlebotomy Department consists of 45 highly skilled, dedicated phlebotomists among all three sites, who provide an outpatient drop in service Monday to Friday for GP patients over the age of 18 and hospital based bloods for patients over the age of 12. The Phlebotomy team provide a morning inpatient service to up to 70 wards across NUH and a Nerve Centre referral service at QMC and City hospital in the afternoons Monday to Sunday.

The Phlebotomy department pride themselves in having their own bespoke induction programme to support trainees in their development through their venepuncture training. We have 4 hardworking Senior/Coordinator Phlebotomists who support the Phlebotomy Lead and Deputy, along with mentors in the team to provide support and training to new starters.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will participate in the provision of a Trust-wide phlebotomy service including weekends and bank holidays to Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust. The post holder will support the Phlebotomy Service Lead in coordination of a team of phlebotomists to facilitate the delivery of a quality driven, cost effective and patient focussed phlebotomy service. To undertake venepuncture in different places like inpatient and outpatient within the Trust, documenting patient information and tests required as appropriate. Participate in the delivery of the Phlebotomy Service training, venepuncture training and development program.

Training and Qualificiations

Essential criteria
- 4 G.C.S.E's C or above or equivalent
- Undertaken a period of formalised Phlebotomy Training in a previous role.
- Evidence of achievement of competency based training programme and utilisation of skills within last 12 months.

Experience

Essential criteria
- Minimum of 2 years working within a phlebotomy department.
- Can demonstrate an Understanding and respect of confidentiality in the workplace
- Experience with delivering a link role within the phlebotomy department.
- Able to perform venepuncture procedure competently

Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in an acute hospital environment
- Experience of teaching/mentoring trainee/students.

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria
- Understands and practices the principles of confidentiality
- Can describe a situation where they were able to minimise interpersonal conflict
- Computer literate (able to use MS Outlook, A, I MS word, enter data onto excel spread sheets).
- Evidence of the ability to co -ordinate a team/service
- Ability to deal with exposure to distressing situations.
