Due to promotion within our Adult Critical Care and Theatres pharmacy team; Nottingham University Hospitals NHS trust has an exciting opportunity for three enthusiastic individuals to join our well established and valued team. One post will be primarily based in Adult Critical Care and the other two in Theatres with each role receiving full training to provide cross-cover.

You will work closely alongside a team of experienced, hardworking and dedicated technical staff, clinical pharmacists and medical and nursing staff colleagues to provide a high quality pharmacy service to critically unwell patients and those undergoing surgery.

We are looking for enthusiastic applicants who are eager to learn and have the ability to use their own initiative to organise and prioritise their own work to meet deadlines in these fast paced and challenging clinical environments. Applicants must have excellent communication skills and demonstrate the ability to work positively as part of a team.

You must be in possession of a Level 2 in Pharmacy Services Assistant Standard or an equivalent qualification to work as a band 3.

Main duties of the job

To work as part of the Clinical Pharmacy Team to provide a high quality pharmacy service to Adult Critical Care and Theatres.

You will be responsible for making sure patients have the important medicines that they need in the right place at the right time to provide excellent care.

The post holder must be committed to providing a patient focused, efficient service to some of the sickest patients in the Trust, ensuring a positive image of the Pharmacy

Full in house training will be provided by our dedicated and supportive team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To contribute fully to the weekly provision of the drug and fluid replenishment service to the clinical and theatre areas ensuring each specific location is adequately stocked. This will include assisting pharmacy stores in picking or checking the orders and delivering to clinical areas to ensure timely supply.
- In liaison with pharmacy stores and the MMTs, maintain and review drug supply issues relevant to the clinical area to ensure an effective and safe system of drug supply, through effective communication with relevant pharmacy and critical care or theatres staff.
- To co-ordinate, process and deliver ad-hoc and urgent stock requests ensuring that stock levels are efficiently maintained
- To ensure that all stock is put away in the correct storage area, ensuring drug cupboards and automated drug cabinets are tidy and labelled as appropriate.
- To ensure that ward stock is rotated so that the oldest stock, or stock with the shortest expiry, is used first to minimise wastage. To remove and replenish expired stock and recycle stock close to its expiry for use within the Trust where possible. To report any storage concerns to the ward manager and relevant MMT or Pharmacist.
- To maintain the medicines stock and critical drugs list for theatres and adult critical care, regularly completing defined audits of availability of drugs, reviewing and adjusting stock levels in liaison with ward pharmacists and theatre managers to ensure adequate stock holdings and minimising wastage.
- To record cost-savings and wastage as appropriate. After full training: to add new starters to the automated medicines storage system (currently Omnicell®) providing fingerprint access and completing competency based training to both pharmacy and clinical staff. To undertake staff re-training where necessary to support correct and efficient use of the cabinets.
- To assist in the stocking of drugs in new theatres and removing stock from theatres during closures.
- To contribute to the medicines returns process for the clinical area and champion efficient and safe use of medicines
- When working in critical care, put away individual patients’ medications into their bedside lockers once dispensed, ensuring that the appropriate checks are carried out so that medication is placed in the correct patient’s locker. This may involve exposure to challenging patient and public behaviours.
