Nottingham University Hospitals Pharmacy department has an exciting opportunity for a Medicines Management Assistant to join the Respiratory pharmacy team working in one of the UK’s largest and busiest acute teaching hospital Trusts.

This post will involve working alongside our established pharmacy team, consisting of Pharmacists and Medicines Management Technicians. We are aiming to improve and enhance our comprehensive pharmacy service that we already have on the many Respiratory wards at City Hospital.

The Medicines Management Assistant will be a crucial component of the Respiratory pharmacy team and their contributions will make a huge difference to patient care and this is recognised by the entire Multidisciplinary Team within Respiratory. To manage the medicines stock for Respiratory and ensuring adequate stock is available in the clinical areas and proactively managing stock levels.

Playing an active role in managing the transportation and transfer of medications between different clinical areas with the patients.

Actively take part in projects, ensuring cost effectiveness and mínimal wastage of medication within the clinical areas.

Expediting urgent inpatient requests to minimise delay of administration and ensuring TTOs are dispensed quickly to maintain efficient patient flow through the hospital.

We continue to extend the ideal model of delivering medicines optimisation and pharmaceutical care where pharmacists are fully integrated in to the medical teams, supported by a team of medicines management technicians and assistants.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To contribute to the provision of a drug and fluid top up service to the clinical area, ensuring each specific location is adequately stocked.

In liaison with pharmacy stores and the MMTs, maintain and review drug supply issues relevant to the clinical area to ensure an effective and safe system of drug supply, through effective communication with relevant pharmacy and ward staff.

To co-ordinate and process ad-hoc stock requests ensuring that stock levels are efficiently maintained.

To ensure that all ward stock is put away in the correct place, keeping ward stock cupboards & trolleys tidy.

To ensure that ward stock is rotated so that the oldest stock, or stock with the shortest expiry, is used first to minimise wastage. To remove and replenish expired stock and recycle stock close to its expiry for use within the Trust where possible. To report any storage concerns to the ward manager and relevant MMT/Respiratory Pharmacist.

To maintain ward stock lists for the respiratory wards, reviewing and adjusting stock levels in liaison with ward pharmacists and ward sisters to ensure adequate stock holdings within financial resources and minimising wastage.

To contribute to the medicines returns process for the clinical area and champion efficient and safe use of medicines

To process medicines returns following NUH pharmacy Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring all items are returned on the computer to the correct cost centre, and put away or if not reusable, disposed of correctly, maximising drug usage and financial resources.

To put away individual patients’ medications into their bedside lockers once dispensed, ensuring that the appropriate checks are carried out so that medication is placed in the correct patient’s locker. This may involve exposure to challenging patient/public behaviours.

To facilitate the rapid transfer of patients’ medications to and from the dispensary either by air tube or on foot, for those prescriptions that cannot be supplied from the ward-based pharmacy stock list

To collect and transfer patients’ medication between wards and departments.

To facilitate the rapid supply of urgent stock controlled drugs to the ward, by transferring the order book to the controlled drug room & delivering dispensed supplies back to the ward in accordance with departmental procedures and standards.
