**The Role and Department**

Careers & Enterprise sits within the Education Division, which is headed by the Pro Vice Chancellor for Education, and is part of the University’s developmental approach to ensuring effective student engagement, achievement and positive progression.

The Postgraduate Research Careers Adviser will create and deliver a comprehensive programme of careers, employability and employment support to researchers, both postgraduate researchers (PGR) and research staff. The role will be crucial in identifying and supporting the additional careers and employability needs of research students (PhD and MRes) and research staff, whether they wish to pursue a career within or without academia. The Postgraduate Research Careers Adviser will contribute to the University’s Researcher Development Programme (working closely with Durham Centre for Academic Development) as well as contributing to the planning and delivery of bespoke development activities for Durham’s Doctoral Training Centres and European-funded initiatives, in collaboration with partner Universities, as well as supporting joint activities with other North-Eastern Universities. The postholder will also contribute to the University’s commitment to providing support to research staff as part of the HR Excellence in Research Award (HREiR).

To effectively meet the career support needs of a diverse research community at Durham, the Postgraduate Research Careers Adviser will work closely with faculties and academic departments as well as key internal stakeholders (e.g. Durham Centre for Academic Development, Research Culture Committee, Directors of Research, Research Innovation Services). The role will also involve engagement with key external stakeholders including professional membership organisations (Vitae, AGCAS), research funders and policy makers (e.g. UKRI) and employers. As part of the strategic review of postgraduate research provision, the postholder will collaborate with the Associate PVC for Postgraduate Research Students and contribute to relevant workstreams of the Durham Doctoral School.

The postholder will work in partnership with careers adviser colleagues as part of an integrated team, delivering effective careers education, careers and employability guidance, advice and support to Durham University students and graduates.
