**The Role and Department**

The Philosophy Department at Durham University is a centre for world-leading research in a wide range of fields, grouped into four research clusters:

- 1. _Aesthetics, Ethics and Politics;
- 2. _History of Philosophy;
- 3. _Mind, Language and Metaphysics; and
- 4. _Science, Medicine and Society.

It leads several interdisciplinary research centres, including the Centre for Humanities Engaging Science and Society (CHESS), the Durham Centre for Ancient and Medieval Philosophy, the Centre for the Ethics of Cultural Heritage and the Centre for the History of Medicine and Disease. Collaborative interdisciplinary research is at the heart of our research and impact strategy, as is our very strong performance in external research funding.

At both postgraduate and undergraduate level, students can choose from a wide range of topics spanning the whole discipline of philosophy. Admissions to the Department’s undergraduate programmes is competitive, and we consistently perform strongly in national rankings for philosophy. We have one of the largest PhD programmes in the UK and many of our students go on to pursue highly successful academic careers.

A good degree (Undergraduate or Master’s) is required, with some background in philosophy of science and it would be helpful to have some background in causation.

**Responsibilities**:

- To understand and convey information through presentations and discussions that contributes to the production of research reports and publications that may need careful explanation.
- To write up results of research work, present information on research progress and outcomes to bodies supervising research in a clear and accurate manner.
- To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines by discussing with the Principal Investigator or Co-I
- To liaise with research colleagues and make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding to form relationships for future research collaboration.
- To contribute to fostering a collegial and respectful working environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect.
- To engage in continuing professional development by attending relevant training and development courses.
- To undertake literature searches and research to identify and analyse relevant work on causation, warrant and causal prediction.
- To contribute to the preparation of lectures and accompanying PowerPoint slides relevant to the research area.
- To set up and maintain a project website.
- To coordinate administrative tasks such as liaising with the AHRC and research offices, maintaining the project budget, arranging and coordinating project events and arranging travel.

This post is fixed term until 31 December 2025 as dictated by the budget and project plan already agreed with the funder.

The post-holder is employed to work on research/a research project which will be led by another colleague. Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.

Successful applicants will, ideally, be in post by 1 July 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter.
