Diabetes Specialist Midwife

Provide professional leadership and expert advice to midwives and all other health professionals in relation to diabetes. To have made an effective contribution to reaching the Trusts vision, strategic objectives and key work programmes. To work independently or with colleagues providing the highest standards of midwifery care for women with diabetes and their families. To work in conjunction with the Lead Consultant Obstetrician and Consultants Endocrinologist, including the diabetic specialist nurse and dietician, in delivering a multidisciplinary approach in caring for women with diabetes.
Prioritise health promotion needs for women and their families and formulate a plan of care to meet their needs in relation to diabetes. Providing direct client care including health education and interpretation of blood glucose levels and advising patients of correct insulin doses to enable them to manage their diabetes. Provide and promote high quality midwifery care and advice within a multidisciplinary environment.Work closely with the Complex care team, Fetal and Maternal medicine Consultants. Overseeing the day to day running of the Diabetes team and the duties of staff.
Ensure that you have full oversight of the caseload and that women are on the advised pathway for their care. Take part in annual appraisal of staff and participate in the recruitment process. To develop an effective learning environment for all learners and identify training needs. Liaise with senior midwives with regards to training requirements and participate in the in-service training programmes.
