The Department for International Trade (DIT) is responsible for facilitating UK trade across the world by promoting and financing international trade and investment.
DIT’s objectives are to secure free trade agreements and reduce market access barriers ensuring consumers and businesses can benefit; encourage economic growth across the UK via attracting and retaining trade and investment; support UK businesses to take full advantage of trade opportunities, and champion the rules-based multilateral trading system, including protecting UK firms from unfair trade practices.

The Analysis Group within DIT undertakes analysis to inform DIT’s full range of policymaking and to ensure that policy delivery has the biggest positive impact on the UK’s economy. We are here to ensure that Ministers and senior DIT personnel can make informed policy and operational decisions, based on the best possible analysis.
Reporting directly to the Deputy Director of the Macroeconomic Analysis and Modelling Unit, this new post will lead a team providing analysis on the World Trade Organization (WTO) and multilateral trade, and how actions by other countries - especially market distorting practices - affect UK interests and influence discussions in the multilateral fora. The post-holder will be the senior analyst responsible for designing, managing, and delivering the analysis and evidence to inform DIT’s WTO and multilateral trade policy. This includes providing UK _thought leadership _as part of its WTO membership, the G7 and the G20 and other multilateral trade fora. It also involves delivering DIT’s analytical work to inform UK interests and responses to the type of foreign state-led _market distorting practices _and economic distorting activities that other countries employ, how it affects UK interests and how we might respond to it through discussions about reform of the global trading system.
This role is an exciting opportunity to help shape and lead the delivery of an ambitious and diverse analytical programme to support UK influence and membership of the rules-based multilateral trading system and help defend the UK against harmful trading practices.
**Job description**:
You will lead a multi-disciplinary team of five analysts - with line management responsibilities for three Grade 7s - to deliver a diverse programme of analysis on issues relating to WTO and multilateral trade and the impacts of other countries’ market distorting practices to inform policy positions in these areas.
As Head of the WTO and Multilateral Trade Analysis team, you will take the lead on:
- Designing and resourcing a diverse and dynamic analytical programme of work to underpin, support and inform multilateral trade policy.
- Supporting and developing your team to deliver a variety of ongoing, ad-hoc and planned impactful projects to deliver the analytical work programme.
- Work with analysts across government and UK and international experts and academics to feed in insights and latest thinking and ideas.
- Working with other departments to inform the UK position in multilateral and plurilateral negotiations and demonstrating the economic benefits to the UK and supporting the ratification of any agreements.
- Supporting the UK’s membership of and discussions at the WTO and other multilateral fora, including G7 and G20 discussions on WTO and multilateral trade issues and engagement, in particular, on WTO reform.
- Support policy colleagues and UKMis - Geneva on engagement in WTO committees on other members’ areas of accountability and scrutiny, including Trade Policy Reviews, and accession of new members to the WTO.
Collaborating with senior officials across DIT to help align and deliver and progress DITs international trade priority outcomes
**Hybrid working**
