JOB SUMMARY

A proactive role model and clinical expert who is an experienced health and social care professional in the late stages of their career. The Legacy Mentor will support the development of excellence in the practice learning environment for learners, students, and all new starters to their division and within NUH with a focus on providing strategies to impart expert practice knowledge and experienc

Provide support for practice assessors and supervisors, preceptees and preceptors in their role. This will include providing coaching for newly qualified clinical professionals and/or students on placement to enhance their knowledge and skill

Ensure sharing of best practice within and across divisions to promote a culture of excellence

Work closely with divisional education leads and clinical teams to support and implement the NUH Trust guidance on preceptorship and clinical supervision for nurses and midwives, nursing associates, health care assistants and midwifery support worker

Work with local education teams and the institute of care excellence to facilitate and support clinical and educational programmes relevant to division/area

Support effective communication and proactive working relationships between NUH and nursing / midwifery programme providers from HEIs as required

Provide pastoral support for junior and less experienced healthcare professionals within the directorate, signposting to appropriate services and escalating where appropriate

Identifying key themes or challenges and feeding back via appropriate governance structure

Impart expert knowledge, skills and experience to less experienced staff via formal and informal teaching, support and clinical shadowing

The post holder will work part time, with hours being negotiated locally with a focus on flexible working and service need. They may be required to work across varying wards and departments as required. The post holder may be expected to hot desk as desks and lockers are limited

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

With the support of the Divisional Education Lead and Clinical Educators:
Clinical and Leadership Responsibilities

Supporting practice placements for learners as part of the NUH strategic aim for supporting practice education

Ensure protected time for the role, particularly if this is part of an existing role

Receive training, where required, in coaching and mentoring

Be passionate about their clinical profession and engaging with others, as well as visibly demonstrating collaboration with those undertaking pastoral roles

Working with the Institute Education team to ensure staff meet NMC regulatory requirements and are trained to deliver the highest standard of education support to students, learners and Newly Qualified nurses at NUH

To act as a preceptorship champion, promoting the value of preceptorship and supporting implementation within the directorate

To act as a visible resource of support and advice for learners, preceptors, mentors and managers in practice, escalating clinical concerns appropriately and liaising with higher education facilities and clinical teams

Support the facilitation of in-house accredited training programmes for new starters if applicable.

Research and Development

Promote and practice evidence based nursing / midwifery care

Provide clinical expertise on a range of projects, supporting best practice and enhancing the learning environment for all

Develop or contribute, where appropriate to audit and research that enhances the clinical area/new starter experience

Communication and Relationships

3.1 Develop and maintain links with higher education providers to influence curriculum developments, support recruitment events for new students and the implementation of the curriculum in clinical placement areas
