**About Downing College and the Wellbeing Service**
Founded in 1800, Downing College in the University of Cambridge has a unique and magnificent setting among twenty acres of lawns and trees, yet is located close to the centre of Cambridge.
The College’s aim is to help all students to develop their academic ability and personal potential during their time here. Our annual intake of undergraduate students is currently in the region of 135 and we have just under 1000 undergraduate and graduate students on our roll. The College is also composed of over 50 Fellows and 160 non-academic staff. We pride ourselves on being a friendly and informal community for Fellows, staff and students alike.
Downing’s Wellbeing Service, which provides mental and physical wellbeing support to all Downing students, is housed in its own Student Wellbeing Centre. The service is currently delivered by a full-time Head of Student Wellbeing, a term-time Student Wellbeing Advisor and a part-time College Nurse. The Wellbeing Service works closely and collaboratively with the Tutorial and Admissions Office, which has oversight of all admissions and tutorial matters in the College and provides essential administrative support to students, supervisors, Directors of Studies and Tutors. The Senior Tutor, Prof Guy Williams, is responsible to the Governing Body for all aspects of the educational and welfare provision of the College and the administrative team is led by the Academic Registrar, Sarah Pickard. Dr Kate Daniels is the Head of Student Wellbeing.
**Details of the post**
The post of Student Health Practitioner is key to providing outstanding wellbeing and health support for Downing students. The Student Health Practitioner may be **either** a Registered General Nurse (RGN) with experience of working with mental health issues **or** a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) with experience of working with aspects of physical health. Opportunities for upskilling will be possible for either profile.
At Downing, the promotion of a positive wellbeing culture is a strategic priority. In support of this ambition, the Student Health Practitioner will work closely with all members of the Wellbeing Team to provide timely, responsive and sensitive support to students experiencing mental or physical ill-health or emotional difficulties. With a particular focus on prevention and early intervention, they will assess, triage and support presenting students, referring them on as appropriate and ensuring follow-up care as needed. By maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the support available across the College, University, NHS and third sector services, they will provide clear signposting and advice to both students and student-facing staff, including the Academic Registrar and the Tutorial and Admissions Team, Directors of Studies and Porters.
The post-holder will be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and will have an understanding of safeguarding principles, duty of care and data protection. They will have previous experience of working with young adults, ideally in a higher education setting, and of dealing with confidential and sensitive information. They will have excellent interpersonal skills, will be highly organised, and will be able to balance and prioritise multiple commitments. Given the pressures that can arise at certain times in the academic year, we seek an adaptable and enthusiastic team player who is committed to helping our students thrive at a world-class University and beyond.
