Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUHFT) is a major trauma centre & hub for the Thames Valley Vascular Network (TVVN) which includes two major spoke Trusts; Bucks Healthcare NHS Trust (BHT) & Royal Berkshire Foundation Trust (RBHFT) covering a population of over 2.2 million.
The catchment area is large for the number of surgeons therefore we are one of the busiest units in the UK annually undertaking more than 100 aortic procedures, up to 150 carotid procedures, 40 deep venous reconstructions, 50-100 lower limb bypass as well as thoracic outlet surgery. The unit has a historic reputation for open surgery but also undertakes more complex endovascular work, very distal angioplasty & deep venous arterialisation. We also provide a dissection service for complex spinal reconstructions, a carotid body tumour service & the supra-regional abdominal sarcoma service.

To provide 40 hours of general vascular surgery cover per week. To work with the vascular surgeons based at John Radcliffe Hospital and across the TVVN. They will have access to at least one full day elective operating list per week plus emergency operating as required. An on-call rota is currently in place with allocated rest periods/ days off.

Teaching, Audit & Research
The Fellow may be expected to participate in teaching of the junior doctors working in vascular surgery & occasionally other medical & non-medical personnel.
The post holder will be expected to demonstrate professional development within the post by attending relevant meetings.
Participation in audit is required. There may be some opportunities for research during the appointment.
The Trust comprises of four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

The catchment is large for the number of vascular surgeons and therefore it is one of the busiest units in the UK undertaking the full remit of procedures including: more than 100 aortic procedures (open and endovascular), up to 150 carotid procedures a year, 40 deep venous reconstructions, 50 - 100 lower limb bypass surgeries as well as thoracic outlet surgery and support to the major trauma team.
The unit has a historic reputation for open surgery but also undertakes more complex endovascular work including regular fenestrated and thoracic stent repairs, very distal angioplasty and deep venous arterialisation. The vascular unit also provides a dissection service for complex spinal reconstructions, a carotid body tumour service and the supra-regional abdominal sarcoma service.
The department currently has 10 consultants (including academics) and runs a consultant of the week service on a 1 in 8 rotation. There is a close and respectful working relationship with the interventional radiology (IR) department and there is also a dedicated IR on call consultant. There are 8 middle grades, up to two core trainees and up to 4 FY1s. There is a dedicated vascular studies unit providing an in and outpatient duplex service on weekdays. Across the TVVU there are nine specialist vascular nurses / surgical care practitioners and strong secretarial support in each centre. The service also greatly benefits from a peri-operative consultant physician on the vascular ward on weekdays.
The post-holder will be employed by OUHFT but may work at BHT and RBHFT under an honorary contract. It is expected that the post-holder will adhere to the local policies of all trusts when delivering services at all trusts, and work collaboratively with colleagues at all trusts to allow effective and efficient patient pathways.
