**Job description**:
As a Technical Advisor, you will be able to make a valuable contribution to the success of the Department’s projects whilst gaining specialist expertise and capabilities that will support your career in the Science and Engineering profession. **Responsibilities**

**_ Include, but not limited to:_**
- ** Developing the Better Value Rail Toolkit**: Engaging with colleagues, partners and stakeholders to agree the scope of new content, carrying out research, updating and improving the site, promoting the toolkit and analysing feedback.
- ** Railway Operations**:Participate in expert working groups and carry out independent analysis of timetable data to understand how future projects will impact the operation of the railway network.
- ** Advance our knowledge base and develop others**:Carry out learning activities to gain expertise in our areas of technical specialism, expand and improve the written information in our portfolio and provide training to others to expand corporate knowledge and capability.

**Person specification**:
As the technical advisor, you will have the experience and understanding of rail systems and operations as well as experience of working on infrastructure projects. You can process large quantities of data and analyse data to provide meaningful results, presenting data in clear visual formats. You can communicate to a range of stakeholders and can use different methods to maximise understanding and impact. You can see the big picture, understanding the strategic drivers for your area of work.

**Additional Information**

A minimum **60%** of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.

Occasional travel to other DfT offices will be required.

**Selection process details**:

- This vacancy is using Success Profiles (opens in a new window), and will assess your Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills.**How to apply**
- Experience and understanding of railway systems and operations, such as train planning, the timetable, signalling and rolling stock.
- Experience of infrastructure projects such as: The rationale for new/upgraded infrastructure (the benefits it brings, the problems it is designed to solve, the alternatives if it is not built); The challenges of delivering new and upgraded infrastructure; Examples of major infrastructure projects in the UK.
- Analysis of data in spreadsheet, database and other formats and the ability to process large quantities of ‘raw’ data to provide meaningful results and present these in clear visual formats.
