About the job

**Summary**:
The Special Cases Unit (SCU) sits within the National Security Directorate (NSD) of the Homeland Security Group and is responsible for managing the immigration status of individuals who threaten the highest harm to the UK or its interests overseas or where there is political sensitivity.

Our work focuses on using immigration tools to disrupt threats to national security (including terrorists), serious organised criminals and those suspected of war crimes. SCU is a challenging and supportive environment in which to work, providing staff with developmental opportunities whilst contributing to public safety, effective control of immigration and the national security of the UK.

As part of the Homeland Security Group in the Home Office we work closely with partners across Government and the Home Office. The work of SCU is of particular interest to the Home Secretary and Ministers Special Cases.

**Job description**:
The Special Cases Unit (SCU) is the immigration arm of HSG. It manages some of the most significant and high harm immigration, asylum and citizenship cases, including suspected terrorists, extremists, war criminals and individuals involved in organised crime. In support of these functions, SCU collaborates with, the Police, UK Visas & Immigration, Border Force, Immigration Enforcement, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and National Crime Agency, as well as the Home Secretary and Ministerial offices.

**Responsibilities**:
What you will do:
For all roles, you will:

- Develop expertise and a broad professional network to understand how the political and social situations in countries around the world impact the UK’s security and immigration processes. You will use intelligence and research to analyse cases and form conclusions, resulting in the submission of sound, well-reasoned advice to the Home Secretary and Ministers.
- Be expected to draft robust and well written immigration decisions, in line with Home Office policies and guidance, often to tight deadlines. Full training on casework decision-making, as well as mentoring from experienced staff, is provided. You will need to engage confidently with a range of stakeholders to provide timely and accurate advice whilst effectively managing expectations.
- Be expected to provide high-quality responses to correspondence and Parliamentary Questions within departmental timescales and assist lawyers with any legal challenges relating to the team’s cases. You will also respond to correspondence, Freedom of Information requests and provide advice to other Home Office or HMG colleagues on relevant cases.
- If required, provide verbal briefings to Ministers, MPs, senior officials and external partners. You may also be required to support HSG’s work in Parliament and represent SCU in senior level cross-Whitehall meetings.

SCU is a rewarding and important place to work. Every week you will work on cases that have a material impact on the security of the UK, and at times you will be responsible for working on issues that are at the top of the Government’s agenda.

You will be working in a fast-paced, friendly, supportive team where there are many development opportunities. New joiners to the Unit are provided with formal training, shadowing opportunities, full induction to the Homeland Security Group. All members of SCU also benefit from central Civil Service learning and development, countless workshops led by operational partners and other government departments, and the opportunity to participate in wider directorate projects.

This role provides excellent links to work taking place elsewhere in the directorate, the department and many other areas of government. SCU is a fantastic place to build up skills that will serve you well for the rest of your career. The profile and diversity of our work provides ample opportunity to demonstrate and develop behaviours that will be valuable for future roles.

We value our staff:
HSG actively embraces diversity and promotes equality of opportunity, to enable us to reflect the communities that we serve. We have a strong diversity network, led by an HSG director and supported by an Equality and Diversity working group.

HSG provides people with the opportunity to work at pace and deliver in stretching roles. You will learn a lot in your day to day work - but we also provide excellent wider learning and development opportunities.

Roles in SCU provide staff with excellent opportunities to
