**Job summary**:

We are responsible for England’s environment both on the land and sea, our countryside and rural economy, the food and farming sectors and have lead responsibility for protection from a wide range of natural threats and hazards.

We are looking for someone to join our team as one of our Strategic Communications Officers. The person in this role will drive development and delivery of our plans and wider strategy, joining up the work across the Defra Group communications directorate to ensure effective reach and engagement with all of our audiences. The post holder will support a Strategic Communications Manager under Head of Strategic Communications.

**Job description**:
**In this role you will**:

- Generate ideas and strategies to meet project objectives.
- Support the planning and delivery of our communications priorities and plans.
- Build key relationships across the organisation (including policy teams, Ministers’ private offices, press office and communications contacts across the Defra group and in other government departments).
- Work effectively with others internally and externally.
- Identify and build audiences, gather insight, and deliver engagement.
- Support horizon scanning work that spots opportunities to advance our communications objectives and identifies risks.

**Person specification**:

- A good understanding of a wide mix of channels including digital, media, stakeholder, events and branding and how to use them effectively to deliver a strategic plan.
- Strong influencing skills, and experience of building positive relationships and establishing networks internally and externally with stakeholders, partners and colleagues.
- Excellent planning, management and organisational abilities.
- Experience of effectively working with and advising very senior colleagues.
- The ability to work well under pressure, managing multiple priorities and tight deadlines, whilst motivating and leading others in such circumstances.
- Good analytical skills, plus excellent written and oral communications skills reflecting the need to explain complex policy areas to non-specialist audiences in a clear and engaging way.

This means that Defra new joiners will be located alongside existing colleagues in offices a short distance away from Nobel House in our other office at 2 Marsham St, London.

To work from 2 Marsham Street, you will require the higher level of CTC clearance. Therefore, confirmation of appointment to the advertised post will be dependent upon successful CTC clearance being confirmed as part of pre-employment checks.

- Bristol - Horizon House (Please note that space at this office is limited and it may not be possible for all Policy roles to be recruited to this location);
- London - Nobel House and 2 Marsham Street.
