Senior Clinician/clinician

**Job Purpose**
To make a leading contribution to the activities of the Division of Small Animal Clinical Studies, School of Veterinary Medicine by developing, managing, leading and directing the affairs of a dynamic, high quality, small animal primary care practice based at the Small Animal Hospital and serving the surrounding area.
It is anticipated that the practice will contribute to the Division and School’s activities in the following areas:
- Provision of primary care caseload for student teaching and income generation
- Teaching, supporting, coaching, supervision and assessment of students, focussing on final year students in a practice setting
- Supporting and increasing the caseload of the Small Animal Hospital
- Enhancement of the Division’s and School’s reputation through delivery of high quality patient care and customer service
- Collaborative clinical research and welfare and social scholarship
**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
**Clinical**:
1. To lead the development and grow a dynamic, high quality, small animal primary care practice based at the Small Animal Hospital and serving the surrounding area.
2. To be responsible for income generation and the development of a sustainable business model.
3. To develop and direct clinical activity which stimulates growth in practice caseload and Small Animal Hospital caseload through referral of patients.
4. To develop and continually update personal skills and knowledge as appropriate to small animal practice in support of clinical, teaching and scholarship activities.
5. To lead, develop and manage promotional activities and events relating to the practice.
7. To ensure that clinical quality assurance measures are in place and validated.
8. To provide leadership and support to staff associated with the service.
9. To develop a prominent professional profile locally and nationally/internationally, focussing on areas where there is synergy with the Division and School’s activities.
10. To ensure compliance with the continuing professional development requirements of Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in relationship to membership and to maintenance of any postgraduate qualifications.
**Teaching**:
11. To make a leading contribution to the strategic development of small animal primary care teaching and competency based training in the small animal clinical area benchmarked against the RCVS day one competencies and the AVMA/AVMC Council on Education clinical competencies.
12. To contribute to the planning, organisation, delivery and development of the School’s learning and teaching activities, focussing on final year BVMS students in the practice setting, as directed by the Head of Division in consultation with the course leaders.
13. To contribute to the delivery of a range of assessment activities (using a variety of methods and techniques), engage fully in the examination process and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.
Scholarship:
15. To engage in personal scholarship which is synergistic with day-to-day activities resulting in personal development and an enhanced external reputation.
16. To develop opportunities for interdisciplinary and collaborative clinical and/or educational research, which may include welfare and social scholarship, primarily with staff within the Division, School and wider University but also with staff in other Schools, Colleges, Universities and other clinical organisations where appropriate.
18. To attend and actively contribute/participate in national/international events/ seminars/conferences as appropriate to area of scholarship by invitation or otherwise.
19. To develop and lead, in consultation with the Director of Commercial Operations, a dynamic, high quality, small animal primary care practice based at the Small Animal Hospital and serving the surrounding area, ensuring that it runs efficiently and in a cost effective manner.
20. To contribute towards the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ Practice Standards Awards as required.
21. Contribute to performance and development review processes of staff working within the service in accordance with University Strategy.
22. To act, as directed by the Head of Division, to manage and advance the personal development of staff working within the service.
**Knowledge/Qualifications**
**Essential**:
A1 Veterinary degree, registerable with the RCVS prior to commencing employment.
A2 Postgraduate/ further clinical qualification relevant to small animal practice, e.g. RCVS Certificate, RCVS Advanced Practitioner status, OR evidence of development of advanced clinical skills relevant to small animal practice.
**Desirable**:
B1 Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, Recognising Excellence in Teaching or equivalent.
