London, United Kingdom National Grid Full time

**The opportunity**:
National Gas is looking for a Policy and External Affairs Officer to join our External Affairs team, which sits in the wider Corporate Affairs business unit. In this role, you will help National Gas continue to deliver energy security, alongside the transition to a clean energy future that works for every home and business.

If you’re passionate about developing and influencing energy policy, reaching net zero and want to support the important role that the energy sector plays in the economy, then this could be the role for you

**Who is National Gas and why join us?**:
National Gas is leading a clean, reliable, and affordable energy future for everyone. Our skilled colleagues bring gas to 23m homes, and over 500,000 businesses, including heavy industries and power stations that keep Great Britain's lights on. We also fuel growth and innovation, transitioning our GB-wide network to hydrogen, to play our part in the journey to net zero.

As the owners and operators of Great Britain’s transmission system (a pipeline network for moving gas), we transport gas across the country, to Ireland and to Europe. In the future, this will transition to hydrogen, and CO2 to support carbon capture and storage.

While we’ve been operating the National Transmission System for years, National Gas itself is a new company, recently splitting from National Grid. As a result, you’ll be joining a new, dynamic, and high-profile team, which is successfully establishing National Gas as the backbone of the UK’s energy system and essential to net zero. This is therefore an exciting opportunity to join this growing team and help be at the forefront of the energy transition.

With a General Election on the horizon, and the importance of energy security continuing to rise-up the political and societal agenda, this policy role will play a critical role in supporting National Gas to deliver its mission. **Join us, and help be the energy behind the change.**

**Key accountabilities**:
In this role, you will help coordinate and deliver internal policy development, engagement with civil servants / external policy influencers, and monitor legislative and policy progress across Westminster and the Devolved Nations.

You will also demonstrate excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills - supporting engagement both internally and externally and be empowered to network and represent the organisation.

You’ll be reporting into the Head of External Affairs, and will be able to take advantage of National Gas’ training and development opportunities, receive coaching and mentorship and have access to a wide variety of company benefits.

You will work closely with colleagues across the Corporate Affairs business unit - which is comprised of External Affairs, Media and Digital, and Political/Public Affairs, as well as the wider organisation to:

- **
Lead the development of National Gas’ cross-cutting policy positions** - such as on skills, planning and tax. Your responsibilities will include helping develop and shape policy solutions, responding to consultations and calls for evidence, drafting policy briefings and fiscal submissions, including those from HM Opposition. You will also **support our technical leads with their policy development/content** - including on energy security and gas, hydrogen, Carbon Capture and Storage, and other emerging energy technologies and priorities.
- **Build and maintain relationships across the civil service - particularly the Department for Energy and Net Zero (DESNZ) and Department for Business and Trade (DBT) **to promote and advance National Gas policy priorities** **and** help bring value from our engagement and activity with our Trade Associations and agencies, **including** **feeding in National Gas priorities and taking part in industry working groups.
- ** Act as the central "hub" that collaborates with various business units to update on policy developments and gather input on policy priorities, to help inform our policy campaign priorities.** While also ensuring seamless communication and alignment across National Gas, so the organisation can present a united front externally.
- **
Hold meetings with business unit leaders to understand their policy needs and gather input on advocacy priorities. **These will help shape and inform Corporate Affairs policy campaign priorities, which are focused on hydrogen, Carbon Capture and Storage and natural gas.
- **
Monitor policy developments in areas of relevance for National Gas from both Westminster and the Devolved Nations.** This includes the different governments in the UK and Opposition parties
- **
Attend external meetings and events as a representative to gather information, contribute to discussions, share intelligence and network across the industry.** Your external engagement should also help advance the core Corporate Affairs policy campaigns.

**About you**:

- **
Strong research and analytical skills** - i
