**Purpose**:
The Head of Translational Investment Fund is responsible for building, directing, and managing a team of professionals, including project managers, consultants, and co-development partners. This team will advance a pipeline of intellectual property in the life sciences and deep tech space to de-risk technologies and add value to the University assets prior to partnering. This team’s mission is to conduct product development projects for vetted and commercially validated technologies to make them industry-ready. The team fills the gap between discovery and commercial assets.

**Responsibilities**:
Responsibilities for the Head of Translational Investment Fund role will include, but are not limited to:

- Leading a team responsible developing and delivering translational investment projects to increase the value of the potentially most valuable and impactful assets.
- Establishing TIF as a premium vehicle for translating University of Cambridge research to market.
- Building and managing the team, including setting a culture of proactive, supportive but commercial mindset.
- Establish and manage the investment committee and associated governance for TIF.
- Creating, managing and executing an integrated and robust commercially savvy process for evaluation and selection for investments into innovations from TIF.. A further output will be excellent feedback to the researcher on how to make their work more commercially attractive.
- Creating and executing translational investment projects to move technologies through milestones to commercially tractable endpoints.
- Cultivating new relationships and fostering existing relationships with industry and product development contract organizations to identify co-development opportunities.
- Collaborating with the Technology Transfer and Seed Funds teams to foster strong relationships with researchers ensuring inventors are engaged and aware of commercialisation potential and how to work with the translational investment fund.
- Working with the Cambridge Enterprise leadership team on setting development priorities, overseeing development operations, recommending future research ventures, and representing the scientific and development interests of the University of Cambridge.
- Overseeing financial matters, including budgeting, financial analysis, and reporting including board meeting preparation. Responsible for reporting on a twice annual basis into investment committee CE Board and University PRC committee.
- Develop and implement a clear stakeholder plan for TIF across the University of Cambridge including CATs, OTR, Milner, IAA accounts etc.
- Develop a clear external stakeholder plan including government research funders and charities with a view to leverage and scale funding available.
- Develop a communications plan for TIF internally to University and externally to the ecosystem, government and media.
- Manage, optimise and evolve the TIF business case on an annual basis.
- Develop a set of peer relationships with translational programmes at globally leading institutions in the US (Harvard, Stanford, Austin), UK (Oxford, UCL) and Europe (Leuven) and others.
- Ensure TIF is scaled appropriately for the opportunity set.
- Ensure TIF is serving the broadest needs of the University including Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and AHSS.

**Required Qualifications**:
Technical Requirements
- Ph.D. in a technical field or equivalent industry experience.
- Significant experience (ideally >10 years) in translational research and development in an industrial context.
- Ability to build and lead a team to deliver translational research and development to Experience industrial quality ends.
- Experience in developing financial projections.
- Strong competency in managing complex collaborations between academia and industry.
- General knowledge of licensing practices.
- Executive-level leadership experience in industry and/or academia.
- Proven success in building and driving early-stage innovation to commercially relevant assets.

**Interpersonal Requirements**
- Demonstrated history of leading/managing cross-functional and multidisciplinary teams of stakeholders and researchers in a matrix environment.
- Strong competency in developing complex collaborations.
- Experience building and managing a team.
- Proven ability of forging a strong network of development partners.
- Ability to communicate complex scientific concepts clearly and concisely to audiences with and without technical expertise.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively enable strong collaboration and teamwork among a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders.
- Successful track record of simultaneously managing multiple projects at different stages of execution.
- Past success thinking both strategically and tactically and gaining support among stakeholders to work toward achieving stated objectives.
