The responsibilities for the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero for 2023 are as follows:

- Delivering security of energy supply
- Ensuring properly functioning energy markets
- Encouraging greater energy efficiency
- Seizing the opportunities of net zero to lead the world in new green industries

For 2023, our priorities are:

- Ensure security of energy supply this winter, next winter and in the longer-term - bringing down energy bills and reducing inflation.
- Ensure the UK is on track to meet its legally binding Net Zero commitments and support economic growth by significantly speeding up delivery of network infrastructure and domestic energy production.
- Improve the energy efficiency of UK homes, businesses and public sector buildings to meet the 15% demand reduction ambition.
- Deliver current schemes to support energy consumers with their bills and develop options for long-term reform to improve how the electricity market works for families and businesses.
- Seize the economic benefits of Net Zero, including the jobs and growth created through investment in new green industries.
- Pass the Energy Bill to support the emerging CCUS and hydrogen sectors; to update the governance of the energy system; and to reduce the time taken to consent offshore wind.

**Job description**:
This is an excellent opportunity to join a friendly and supportive team working as a G7 climate resilience and greenhouse gas removals lead to support our understanding of the physical risks of climate change and to oversee our scientific input into greenhouse gas removals (GGR) policy.

The Climate Science Team is a key part of the Science and Innovation for Climate and Energy (SICE) Directorate.

We are responsible for managing UK climate capability and greenhouse gas emissions reporting; leading the UK’s relationship with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; and providing scientific input to a broad range of domestic and international policies.

We are a multi-disciplinary team that delivers through a mixture of core expertise, directly commissioned research and collaboration with other research entities both in the UK and internationally.

**Person specification**:
This is a unique opportunity to build our current knowledge and shape our research plans in a priority area for the department, with direct impact on the policies and outcomes we are responsible for.

Reporting to the G6 Head of Climate Science Research and Policy Support, you will build and lead a specialist team to develop our evidence base to: a) identify the risks of a changing climate, with a focus on energy security and resilience, and b) support policy teams with the scientific evidence they need to develop robust interventions.

The post-holder will strengthen our links with research organisations, the wider academic community and relevant stakeholders to design and commission exciting new research to address key evidence gaps.

Having oversight of our £5m climate services for a Net Zero world (CS-N0W) programme, which delivers evidence to strengthen the climate resilience of UK infrastructure, housing and communities, represents a fantastic opportunity for you to get to grips with our ground-breaking research activities from day one and make a real impact.
