This is an appointment to the Department of Trauma & Orthopaedics based in Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Hospitals.

The post is aimed at a surgeon who has completed their Orthopaedic training and has passed the FRCS(Orth.) who is planning a career in shoulder and elbow surgery.

The post holder will work with the three shoulder surgeons in the trust, gaining experience from working with them, and will also have the opportunity to practice independently. The fellow attends elective and upper limb fracture clinics, and operates on elective and trauma shoulder lists. They are on call on the middle grade rota doing general Orthopaedic trauma when on call

The Trust provides general hospital services to a population of approximately 480,000 in West Kent and North East Sussex, and some specialist services to a considerably larger population. Its major hospitals are the Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury and Maidstone Hospital. The Trust’s Headquarters are at Maidstone Hospital.

The Department provides the full range of trauma & orthopaedic services with a specialist emphasis on sub-speciality interest in both elective and trauma surgery. The Department reconfigured with the opening of the new Tunbridge Wells Hospital in September 2011 centralising all inpatient Trauma on the new site. This reconfiguration has allowed the development of a class leading trauma service in which the vast majority of trauma surgery is now performed by Consultant Surgeons or under their direct supervision.

To provide a high standard of care to any patient for whom you have clinical responsibility. This will include any patients referred to you and cared for by you personally or by members of your team and, in addition, any patients of consultant colleagues when you are covering on-call or for annual leave.

To participate in clinical and other service activities and developments with the aim of ensuring a high standard of patient care across the Trust.

Undertake clinic activities as required by the specialty need.

To work in close co-operation with other medical, professional and managerial colleagues, both within and outside the specialty, to provide high quality health care to the Trust’s patients, and to make a contribution to future thinking about the Trust’s strategic direction.
