We are looking for someone to join our team who can support the setting as a Special Educational Needs Coordinator. You will need to have experience of working within a childcare setting as well as an awareness of SEN and the documentations listed in the job description.We want someone to join our wonderful non for-profit registered charity which has been running successfully for over 50 years in the heart of the town of Newquay in Cornwall. Newquay Preschool and Nursery was first established over 50 years ago by parents who noticed a need for childcare for their own children and started their own parent and toddler group. The group grew and so the founders re located the setting to a larger establishment forming Newquay Playgroup then in 1988 the setting moved again to its current location and became Newquay Preschool and Nursery. The setting was the first of its kind in the local community and so has a very long and wonderful history and is much loved seeing many families grow and return with their own children. It has strong ties to the local community and has strived over the years to provide affordable quality childcare for families.You will need to be committed to supporting children with SEN and have high aspirations for all children who attend the setting.

The rate of pay is £11.00 per hour

You must have a level three qualification in childcare and education or above.

**Purpose** **of the job**: Responsible for the day-to-day management of the Special Educational Needs (SEN) provision in the setting.

**Safeguarding requirement**:Newquay Preschool and Nursery is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. It is a requirement of all staff that they share this commitment and follow the prescribed policy and procedures to continuously promote a culture of safeguarding across the whole organisation.

**Main duties**

1. To work with the senior management team to implement duties relating to part 3 of the Children and Families Act 2014, Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice: 0 to 25 years (DfE/DoH 2015) and the Equality Act 2010.

3. To work with the senior management team to ensure that the setting’s SEN provision effectively identifies and supports children with SEN and ensures equality of opportunity.

4. To work with the senior management team to ensure SEN practice reflects relevant in house policy and procedures and that all are regularly reviewed and updated.

5. To oversee the day-to-day operation of the SEN provision.

6. To work in partnership with the whole staff team to ensure that everyone understands their responsibilities for children with SEN and the setting’s graduated approach to identifying and meeting children’s needs.

8. To collate information on the needs of individual children and ensure that all associated records on children with SEN are maintained and updated, with relevant information passed on at transition.

10. To work in partnership with parents/carers to identify and review their child’s SEN, provide confidential support and advice, provide daily informal contact and regular information on their child’s progress towards agreed outcomes. Also to involve parents in all other key elements of their child’s care and support including ensuring their views and wishes are taken into account and that they participate in decision making processes.

11. To be familiar with local services and work in partnership with relevant agencies on the delivery of SEN provision such as Area SENCOs, Portage, SALT, and the IASS.

12. To signpost and refer parents to appropriate local support services and relevant external agencies.

13. To be familiar with the local authority’s Local Offer, explaining the provision available for children with additional needs, and regularly review and update the setting’s own ‘offer’.

14. To communicate appropriately with all children with SEN and ensure where relevant their appropriate participation, including in relevant decision making processes.

15. In conjunction with the manager, ensure that the local authority is made aware of any children who are not progressing despite being given suitable support.

16. To be familiar with local practices for safeguarding children and instigating Early Help Assessments.

17. To identify training gaps in staff skills, knowledge and expertise on SEN, and where possible address these gaps by contributing towards relevant in-house training or seeking good quality external training provision, such as behaviour management and sign language.

18. To be aware of one’s own knowledge, skills and capabilities and recognise and act on relevant gaps.

19. To attend relevant training to keep skills and knowledge up-to-date.

20. To comply with the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation.
