Activity Assistant

The activity assistant role is a new and exciting role on Ward G4 at West Suffolk Hospital. The activity assistant will be based on Ward G4, which is a 32 bedded ward; specialising in acute elderly medicine. Our team needs a highly motivated, positive individual who has excellent interpersonal skills, patience, and enthusiasm.
The role of the activity assistant will compliment the therapy and nursing teams on the ward to create engagement activities whilst considering the needs and interest of the individual patients.
This role will help to support our patients to be mental stimulated by involving them in activities, whether they are group or individual projects and therefore would suit someone with innovative and creative side. No day will be the same and there is flexibility for you to organise your day depending on the patients on the ward at the time. There may be times when patients require 1:1, bespoke experience depending on their requirements, any other opportunities for the activity assistant to organise group activities in our day room.
The successful applicant with will work alongside the ward team, demonstrating various communication tools to and establishing professional relationships with members of the multidisciplinary team, patients, family members and carers.
The activity assistant will be expected to deliver a range of activities and experiences for the patients on the ward, leading to improvements in the physical and mental wellbeing. They would be able to encourage, support and promote independency of patients and as a result support their discharge out of hospital.
The patients on the ward may have cognitive impairments such as dementia or delirium and therefore experience in this field is beneficial. The successful applicant will have an induction that will include training with our Trust Dementia and Delirium team to support the individual.

Organise, lead, and promote interest in recreational activities in an inclusive, stimulating, and safe environment.
Ascertain and interpret group interests, evaluate equipment and facilities, and adapt activities to meet individual participant needs.
Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in recreational activities, and demonstrate use of materials and equipment.
To develop positive relationships with patients.
To provide structured opportunities for patients to regain social activities
To work as appropriate with the multi-disciplinary team to support the achievement of goals and progress individual treatment plans.
Encourage participants to develop their functional independence and skills through group discussion and activity.
To observe general behaviour, abilities and responses of patients within the ward setting and report them verbally to the multi-disciplinary team and within the electronic record system.
To contribute to assessments of risk within the work environment.
To be involved in the evaluation of group activities as required.
To ensure safe and effective use of equipment and materials within the ward.
To work independently with groups and with individual patients as part of implementing prescribed treatment plans.
Promote an inclusive environment that welcomes and accommodates the diversity of cultures and supports individual needs.
To participate in the delivery of a creative and innovative range of activities and experiences.
Participate in promoting an environment of involvement and recovery for patients.
