Edinburgh, United Kingdom Scottish Water Full time

Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.
- Do you care about the quality of Scotland’s water? Join our team in Edinburgh and train to be a Sampling Administrator.

Scotland famously has some of the finest water in the world, but that doesn’t happen by accident. A team of about 320 samplers, scientists and support staff provide an extensive range of water testing services. Together, we monitor the quality of our water every day, collecting, logging a analysing thousands of water samples from across the country.

To help us with this, we’re looking for a conscientious Sampling Administrator to join the team in Edinburgh. This is an ideal entry level role for someone looking to start their Scottish Water career.

What you’ll do

You’ll learn how to register a high volume of water and wastewater samples from all over Scotland, for a mix of internal and external customers, and for our regulators. This will involve logging information correctly using our lab software. It’s important that you follow clear processes and meet the strict turnaround times for our colleagues in the labs.

You’ll investigate and resolve customer queries. You will also investigate any errors that occur and work out why they happened, helping us to constantly improve. You’ll help schedule and prioritise work within your team and carry out routine maintenance and calibration of equipment.

For the sake of public health and your own safety, we follow very strict internal and industry-specific standards. As part of your training you’ll become very familiar with quality standards like ISO17025 and the UK’s Drinking Water Testing Specification (DWTS) standards. We’ll train you on everything you need to do to work safely. Water quality and employee safety aren’t things we take chances on. Shortcuts aren’t an option.

Lastly, like all our employees, you’ll pride yourself on being able to provide excellent levels of customer service and advice to internal and external customers.

What you’ll need

Obviously it would be great if you had some experience of working in a similar environment. But it’s not essential. We are happy to train people with a genuine interest in water quality.

What you will need is some foundational knowledge to get you off to a flying start. You’ll need to be able to demonstrate:
- Excellent customer service skillsBasic IT skills (e.g., Microsoft Office, Word, Excel)-
- Good attention to detail-
- A commitment to following processes and being conscientious in your work- Looking out for you
- While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.
- This is a full-time job. Once you’re fully trained, you’ll be working on a shift rota, with hours worked between 8.00 am to 8.00 pm according to a 5-week rota. As part of the team, you’ll also take your turn on the standby rota for out-of-hours cover. But you’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.
- When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.
- For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.
- As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash - handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.
- The not-so-small print
- The starting salary for this role is £21,053.00. You’ll be on a progression plan tied to some key training milestones. The goal is for you to increase your salary to £25,468.00 over a 2-year training period.

The role will be based on-site at Juniper House, on the Heriot Watt Research Park and is not suitable for flexible/home working.
