**Job summary**:
The UK’s economic security has taken on increasing importance in recent years, as geopolitical shifts have exposed vulnerabilities and dependencies within global trade.

The Department of Business and Trade (DBT) has an important role in ensuring the economic security of the UK, and in ensuring that this HMG-wide agenda supports our economic growth rather than hindering it. It also has an important role in explaining HMG positions and concerns to businesses, and their voice into the heart of decision-making on this agenda.

The Economic Security team aims to look across DBT’s interests, build strategic positions, respond to fast-moving issues and engage with other Government departments to ensure this important agenda can be effectively delivered.

**Job description**:
The job holder will lead work on the development and delivery of economic security policy. Tasks may include:

- Building relationships across Government and engaging with key departments - in particular, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), HM Treasury and Cabinet Office.
- Driving forward evidence-based development of UK trade policy/trade defence and deterrence against supply chain and economic security risks, including use of unilateral tools.
- Acting as secretariat for Economic Security governance and delivery boards.
- Planning and implementing engagement with external stakeholders and Parliament, as well as bilateral and multilateral trade partners.
- Supporting ministerial briefings and feeding into cross-Whitehall papers on economic security.
- Developing policy positions for bilateral and multilateral engagements.

**Essential Criteria**
- Experience of working in a policy role
- Ability to communicate and influence effectively
- Excellent organisational skills and ability to balance competing priorities

**Desirable Criteria**
- Knowledge and experience of trade policy
- Experience of working in international fora
- Experience working on policy implementation / legislation

**Personal Attributes & Skills**
- Able to identify, provide evidence and analysis on policy options, drawing upon experts as appropriate
- See the big picture and identify links and opportunities in a fast-moving policy area
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across DBT and Whitehall and beyond

**Hybrid Working**

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DBT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.
