Sheffield, United Kingdom Grace Horne Full time

**About the role**

We are looking to hire one research assistant work alongside Dr Grace Horne to create ScissorNet, a new Craft/Historical resource that is dedicated to the preserving, engaging and encouraging interest in Scissormaking as a contemporary craft. The primary goal of the project is to collate information that has already been gathered, explore new avenues of research and create a platform that will allow others to access the information. This will be on-line and in print form.

Scissormaking in the UK is a poorly documented craft practice and has been ‘Red Listed’ by Heritage Craft Association. Over the years, Dr Horne has gathered information and knowledge in the field and is creating a platform (primarily on-line) to act as information library for other interested craftspeople.

Writing informative and accessible interpretation for all sections, online or in print.

Research and collate patents and other historical documents.

The position will involve assistance with all stages of project.

The ability to work independently and the drive to complete projects.

A well organised and methodical approach and strong attention to detail

Working knowledge of Photoshop, Word and In-design or other publishing software.

Experience of academic research.

Excellent research skills and ability to write accessible texts for different outputs and audiences.

An understanding of picture research, copyright procedures and printing

Ability to manage their own time and to work to, meet and ensure others meet deadlines

**Desirable Criteria**:
Previous experience working as a research assistant or equivalent role.

Experience of using/constructing on-line databases, websites or on-line archives.

A desire to learn about historical trades of Sheffield (scissormaking in particular).

Although a PhD is not required, that type of academical rigorous research mentality and training would be beneficial.

You will need: excellent English writing skills; experience of drawing on sources of multiple types (e.g., online publications / reports, historical papers, trade publications, academic articles); the ability to accurately synthesise complex material; and experience of drafting text suitable for a broad craft and academic audience.

Flexible hours, some distance working and part-time will be considered
