Job description
Dr Kate Bramham has research groups focusing on health inequalities in kidney care including pathophysiology of kidney disease in people of African ancestry and community engagement, outcomes of people living with severe mental illness and improving obstetric nephrology care in the UK and Africa.
The post holder has an important responsibility for and contribution to make to infection control and must be familiar with the infection control and hygiene requirements of this role. These requirements are set out in the National Code of Practice on Infection Control and in local policies and procedures which will be made clear during your induction and subsequent refresher training. These standards must be strictly complied with at all times.
This post may be required to work irregular hours.
This post will be offered on a fixed term contract for 36 months.
This is a part-time post - 50% full time equivalent.
Key responsibilities
Review relevant literature and develop a research work programme in discussion with the project lead and others
Work closely with the principal supervisors to develop project protocols and be responsible for ensuring that the research components of the project are carried out in a timely and effective way
Co-ordinate work undertaken for the research project
Ensure timely and appropriate documentation of data relevant to the research project
Establish pilot projects with partners, through working closely with colleagues in the NHS
Ensure that appropriate ethical clearance is obtained for all research activity
Adhere to GCP, local and national governance guidelines pertaining to clinical research
Oversee and lead on the collection and analysis of data
Write progress reports and any periodic documentation required by the ethics committee, NHS R&D department, or the medicines and healthcare regulatory authority (MHRA)
Take the lead in drafting conference papers and papers for publication
Present findings to different audiences and attend relevant conferences
Oversee the work of potential MSc and BSc students, as agreed with the project supervisors
Supervise the work of non-academic NHS staff involved in the research project
Collaborate actively within and outside the Centre for Nephrology Urology and Transplantation to complete research projects and advance thinking
Carry out departmental administration duties as required
Compliance at all times with the requirements of the Health and Safety regulations with responsibility for the health, safety and welfare of others in the working environment
Ensure confidentiality on all matters and information obtained during the course of employment
Undertake any other reasonable duties that are relevant with the Role Outline including up to 20% clinical work
Additional responsibilities
You will collaborate with experts in service improvement, to devise changes to service delivery and audit programmes at national and regional levels, with the objective of improving care and reducing inequity for people with kidney diseases.
You will have responsibility for overseeing junior clinical fellows and medical students during projects with the research group, providing formal and informal training. In addition you will be expected to contribute to the provision of medical student teaching.
You will also play an active role in delivering clinical care, reviewing their own patients in 1-2 kidney clinics per week at King’s College Hospital and making treatment decisions under appropriate consultant supervision. You will assist in the running of clinical trials delivered by the department, delivering those studies safely, on time and to target, complying with the regulatory requirements.

Skills, knowledge, and experience
Applicants should ideally be GCP trained. They must be capable of working equally well in an independent, self-driven manner and as part of a multidisciplinary team, and have strong organisational, leadership and time-management skills.
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical degree
- Completion of UK CMT/IMT or equivalent
- At least two years of clinical renal experience at a Specialty Registrar level (or equivalent)
- Prior research experience
- Previous experience of clinical audit and understanding of QI methodology
- Strong organisational capabilities
- An ability and willingness to work flexibly and in multidisciplinary teams
- Motivation to pursue renal research interes
