**Team overview**

Ofcom is the independent regulator for the UK communications industries.

Ofcom currently licenses around 2,000 television and radio broadcasters and has statutory duties to set and enforce standards for the content broadcast on those services. Ofcom also has duties to ensure that on demand programme services meet required contentstandards.

In our work enforcing broadcasting and on demand standards, Ofcom colleagues could be exposed to potentially harmful or distressing content. Ofcom is committed to the wellbeing of our colleagues and offer a range of support options including 24-hour accessto counselling services.

**Purpose of the Role**

Section Seven (Fairness) and Section Eight (Privacy) of Ofcom’s Broadcasting Code provides a clear regulatory framework for Ofcom to consider and adjudicate on complaints from people and/or organisations who complain that they were treated unfairly and/orthat their privacy was unwarrantably infringed in TV or radio programmes.

We are looking for a colleague at Associate level with excellent analytical, communication, drafting and decision-making skills to join our team of specialists handling fairness and privacy complaints.

**What you will deliver in the role**
- Carry out assessments and investigate complaints about unfair treatment and unwarranted infringements of privacy in programmes.
- Produce high quality written work, including decisions for publication in Ofcom’s Broadcast and On Demand Bulletin, and other case related documents including correspondence for both internal and external audiences.
- Manage a large caseload, prioritise and deliver work in a timely way, keep casework records up-to-date, and archive casework related materials.
- Provide advice and guidance to stakeholders and complainants about fairness and privacy casework.
- Collaborate closely and effectively with other team members, colleagues from other teams, and senior managers.

**Skills, knowledge and experience**

**Essential**
- Analytical and decision-making skills: ability to assimilate lengthy documents and complex issues quickly and demonstrate a command of detail and the wider picture. Ability to take ownership of case work and working independently to produce high qualityresults.
- Communication skills: ability to communicate arguments effectively both verbally and in writing to a variety of audiences, with demonstrable ability to produce high quality written work with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Organisational skills: ability to manage a varied workload with rapidly changing priorities, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
- Teamworking: ability to collaborate with a range of colleagues and stakeholders, readily taking the initiative and building and maintaining effective working relationships internally and with a range of external stakeholders.
- Risk management: ability to identify risk and potentially difficult case related problems and to escalate them in a timely way.

**Desirable**
- Broadcasting, regulatory and/or legal experience: an understanding of broadcasting compliance, regulatory complaint handling, and/or legal experience would be an advantage, but is not essential.
