To be responsible for the reception of patients, relatives, carers and ambulance staff in a calm, professional and polite manner
- To provide excellent customer care that demonstrates a caring and responsive approach to those attending the hospital
- Use tact, diplomacy, understanding and compassion when communicating with patients and visitors who may be distressed
- To answer telephone calls from medical and non-medical staff, providing assistance where possible, or if required communicating important messages to the appropriate people
- Collect personal and confidential information from patients or relatives in order to complete the admissions process. Data may be collected directly from seriously ill patients who have been taken directly to a bed within the unit.
- To accurately record and input information into the Trust’s EPR system in a timely manner
- Printing labels and wristbands for patients when required.
- To ensure the tracking and requesting of medical notes for patients
- File departmental records and organise the culling of filed notes in accordance with Trust guidelines
- To ensure that information on overseas patients is entered accurately onto EPR, to ensure appropriate charges are incurred.
- To assist the other ward clerk(s) with administration duties when required
- Photocopying and other general office procedures
- To deal with general enquiries to the unit regarding patients, both internally and from external agencies such as Police, other health care workers and insurance companies ensuring that they are directed to the correct department of the Trust.
- To liaise with relevant departments within the Trust as necessary to ensure a smooth patient pathway
- To liaise with external agencies such as Ambulance and Police service as necessary to ensure a smooth patient pathway
- To work as part of the combined ward team, providing administration cover where necessary at times of peak workload and / or unavoidable absences or shortages of staff as requested by the management team
- To understand own role and involvement in a Major Incident
- To contribute to own personal development, through attendance at mandatory training and annual appraisal.
- To participate in the induction and training of new members of staff within the team

Robin’s Wardis the specialist surgery ward caring for children requiring craniofacial surgery, cleft lip and palate, plastics, ENT and Neurosurgery. The Hospital’s Theatre Direct Admission service also runs from Robin’s Ward. There are many opportunities for gaining specialist skills and further development.

Kamran’s Wardcares for Children of all ages receiving treatment for cancer or haematology conditions. There is lots of opportunity for professional development within this speciality and the well established team is supportive and progressive

Bellhouse Drayson Wardprovides care for children aged 0-12yrs with all medical conditions specialising in Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Cardiology and Respiratory medicine as either elective or emergency admissions. There are close links with Children’s CDU and Children’s ED. The team are cohesive and supportive in providing high quality care on a busy acute ward.

Childrens CDUis a 24 hour unit which links closely with children’s Emergency Department to provide care for children from a range of specialities who need further assessment, observation, continuation of treatment or to await results. The unit also sees GP referrals and ward attenders which gives varied dynamics to the busy unit. CDU is friendly and ensures the cohesive team works closely together and provides strong support and opportunities to develop.

Melanie’s Wardcares for the older patients from 12years through to transition at 18years. The work is varied and interesting as it covers all specialities seen in Oxford including psycho-social and mental health aspects of care. Patients are admitted both electively and as emergencies and the work is never dull Melanie’s Ward team are versatile and supportive with a strong emphasis on team work.
