MAC Makes Music are recruiting for an enthusiastic freelance music practitioner who will support the planning and delivery for SWITCH.

**About SWITCH**

SWITCH are a talented group of young musicians and MAC’s very own band in residence. They write, produce, record and perform their own songs, covering important topics relating to their personal lives, the challenges they face and the community they live in as well as being young and having fun

SWITCH is an opportunity for young people aged 11 to 25 with an additional need or disability. Sessions currently take place at MAC on alternate Tuesdays at 5pm - 7pm.

Band members are supported to try different instruments and find their musical voice. They also have the opportunity to:

- Develop song writing skills.
- Learn to play music as a band.
- Perform at live events.
- Make new friends who also love music.

**About the role**

The role Emerging Music Leader is for musicians who wish to develop experience working with children and young people, especially those who face barriers to making music. This role involves working alongside an experienced Music Leader supporting children and young people to take part in group music-making activities.

**Key **Responsibilities**
- To help plan creative music-making sessions with the Music Leader.
- To encourage and support children and young people to take part.
- To support the band’s musical output through playing an instrument or assisting in recording.
- To reflect and evaluate sessions with the Music Leader.

**General**
- To be an ambassador for the MAC Makes Music programme and MAC more widely.
- To follow MAC’s safeguarding policy, code of conduct and additional policies for safe working.
- To hold, or be able to obtain, an Enhanced DBS. This is essential for this role.
- Ensuring the careful use and return of MAC Makes Music's equipment.
- Undertake any other duties which may be required from this post.

**A bit about you**

**What you need**:

- Some experience in, and a passion for, creative music-making.
- Ambition to work musically with children and young people.
- Good communication skills and sensitive of different communication styles (e.g. with non-verbal young people).
- Adaptable to new challenges and willing to learn new skills.
- Ability to be patient, caring, empathetic and sensitive.
- Competent and confident musician on principle instrument, comfortable performing in a contemporary pop/rock/hip hop style.

**What would also be useful**:

- An understanding of some of the challenges children and young people face and how that can affect access/engagement in music.
- Confident in supporting original music-making and a willingness to participate in improvisation.
- Current member of a band, in particular a band who write their own music (original songs). Please do share links to any bands/projects if applicable.
- Experience of working with children and young people, particularly children and young people with SEN/D and/or in challenging circumstances.
- Skills in music technology, or recording.
- Confidence and experience in writing music and lyrics.
