We are seeking an exceptional leader to join the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) in the role of Cyber Security Adviser, a new role at the heart of the ONR’s Corporate Security Team.

ONR is the UK’s independent nuclear regulator with the legal authority to regulate nuclear safety, security and conventional health and safety at 36 licenced nuclear sites in Great Britain. Our staff are drawn from an eclectic range of professional background, from civil and mechanical engineering to nuclear physics. ONR’s responsibilities include assessing safety cases, inspecting nuclear sites, regulating transport of nuclear and radioactive materials, and representing the UK and ONR within the wider International nuclear community.

You will have a broad understanding of cloud security technologies and understanding of the modern threat environment, and this will enable you to establish a strong security baseline and identify key areas of cyber risk.

You will also ensure that wider protective security considerations and cyber security activity are aligned and you will need to work collaboratively with colleagues in the Corporate Security Team to ensure consistency of delivery.

As Cyber Security Adviser, you will report into the CISO. Your duties will include (but not limited to):

- Develop ONR’s cyber security policies and requirements to reduce risk and ensure standards are met.
- Provide strategic security advice and guidance to the wider business.
- Support compliance and accreditation against recognised cyber security standards (ISO27001, Cyber Essentials+).
- Lead security engagement with ONR’s managed service provider.
- Lead by example, develop and maintain a strong security culture.
- Be an intelligent customer, leading cyber engagement with Government Security Group, National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), the wider civil nuclear community and other key partners.

In order to be effective in post as Cyber Security Adviser of a wide-reaching and influential organisation, it is essential applicants provide evidence and proven examples across the following selection criteria (but not limited to):

- Strong understanding of, and record of delivering certification against, key cyber security standards (Cyber Essentials+, NIST, ISO27001).
- Working experience of cyber security established best practice guidance (e.g. NCSC, NIST, CSA STAR)
- A proficient communicator, both verbally and written, with the ability to distil complex information and present it clearly.
- Record of leading engagement with key cyber security partners with evidence of delivering security benefits.
- A current, recognised professional security qualification or membership such as CISP, CIISec

Desirable criteria includes:

- Working knowledge of delivering services provided by the NCSC (e.g. Active Cyber Defence) and Government Security Group.
- Working knowledge of the legal and regulatory environment security operates in (e.g. Data Protection Act).
- Recognised security qualifications (e.g. membership of CiiSEC, CiSP)

This role is available as full-time permanent appointment to be based from one of ONR’s offices in Bootle (near Liverpool), Cheltenham or London. Located at any ONR location with the requirement for occasional travel to other ONR offices. ONR operates hybrid working (working in the office and at home) as part of our flexible working policy.

The successful applicant will have access to the Civil Service pension scheme, 25 days per annum leave allowance and be required to work a minimum of 37 hours per week.

The successful applicant will need to hold or obtain SC clearance before appointment.
