This specialist role within the DBA team is to provide database administration services across the entire NHSBSA enterprise. Post holder is recognised as being an IT Lead expert responsible for providing expert advice and training to colleagues, third parties and the wider business.

The role is responsible for availability, security, maintenance, active monitoring and performance enhancement of a number of business critical solutions for the whole organisation and its customers and will be responsible for delivering an excellent range of DBA services that will allow NHSBSA and its customers to benefit from the database technologies. Act as a consultant to team and customers on integrating business needs and IT solutions with database technologies.

You will be working in a growing and experienced team consisting of DevOps engineers, software engineers, DBAs, architects and other SMEs, in addition to agile delivery and project managers.
- Work on observability of relevant database metrics aligned to service SLAs
- Provide database expertise to engineering teams (database migrations, queries and performance optimisations).
- Securing databases platforms and individual databases based on requirements and implementation
- Identify parts of the data platforms that do not scale, provide immediate resolutions and drives long term resolution of these incidents
- Proactively work on the efficiency and capacity planning to set clear requirements and reduce the system resources usage to make cheaper to run
- Drive root cause analysis of incidents and draw on the experience of other members of the team to determine how to better respond to or avoid incidents in future

In this role, you are accountable for:

- Responsible for the creation and maintenance of all NHSBSA databases required for development, testing, education and production
- Plans and implements database backup and recovery strategies for NHSBSA business critical
- Performs on-going tuning of the database instances, highly complex analysis of root cause issues and troubleshooting of problems related to the databases and database infrastructure.
- Responsible for the capacity planning for creating and maintaining the databases to align with business
- Analyses statistical information and advises infrastructure suppliers on optimal storage configurations for database throughput and standardisation
- Responsible for the install, configure and test new versions of the RDBMS (Relational database management systems).
- Control migrations of database changes through the development life
- Designs, implements and enforces security for all of the NHSBSA
- Analysis performance statistics and perform database re-organisations as required to maintain/ improve performance and ensure maximum availability of the business critical databases.
- Perform reviews on the design of database resident code to ensure the NHSBSA standards are being
- Evaluates releases of database software and tools, including third party products to ensure that the NHSBSA is running products that are most appropriate to the business need.
- Plan and perform database software upgrades (out of hours) ensuring mínimal impact to the business.
