Applications are invited for a full-time (10 PA) Consultant in Paediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced BMT Physician to help introduce a new Paediatric Allogeneic BMT Service, building on the established Autograft Service, with joint JACIE accreditation with the adult/TYA Allogeneic BMT Unit.

The successful applicant will join the established team of three Paediatric Haematologists (with a fourth Consultant to be appointed in early 2023), and five Paediatric Oncologists, in providing bone marrow transplantation to children in the East of England region.

The applicant will support the out of hours’ on-call 1 in 8 rota for the department.

Applicants should have specific training in Paediatric BMT as well as experience at Consultant level within the specialty.

You will be fully registered with the GMC and ideally have a CCT or be within six months of award of CCT at the time of interview. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.

As part of our commitment to supporting the medical workforce in the part they play in delivering an excellent caring service to patients, all newly appointed Consultants attend our five-day Consultant Development programme within a year of joining the Trust. Leadership is a key requirement of doctors’ professional work and this innovative programme is designed to support Consultants to hone the leadership and management skills they need to succeed at CUH.

The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013). Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.

The Cambridge Paediatric Haematology/Oncology Centre is one of the larger Principal Treatment Centres (PTC) in the UK, which currently attracts over 120 new referrals of childhood malignancies and over 200 new non-malignant Haematology cases per year.

Paediatric Haematology and Oncology patients are currently cared for within Addenbrooke’s Hospital, but will be moving into the new Cambridge Children’s Hospital due for completion within the next few years, with purpose build BMT accommodation. Related paediatric sub-specialties, radiotherapy, theatres and Paediatric Intensive Care are available on site. The existing adult Cellular Therapy Service, apheresis and stem cell laboratory are well established and co-located.

There are strong academic links available for cancer research in Cambridge, through the Biomedical Research Centre, MRC and CRUK, as well as through academic departments within the university.
