Consultant in Clinical Neurophysiology

Birmingham, United Kingdom Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust Full time

Consultant Neurophysiologist

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, innovative, and forward-thinking substantive Consultant to join our busy Clinical Neurophysiology Service. This is an exciting opportunity to join the team ahead of the move into the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital and develop new ways of working for the benefit of the patients we serve.

**Closing date**: 24thSeptember 2023

**Interview date**: 17thOctober 2023

The post will enable the successful applicant to develop special interests to complement the existing consultants staff, as well as provide complex EMG and EEG reporting. Sub-specialty interest will be encouraged and supported to develop the expanding service.

The appointee will take equal responsibility with existing Consultants for the efficient running of the clinical service, working with clinical, scientific, and managerial colleagues towards achieving and maintaining national maximum waiting times and DMO1. There is a commitment to on-call for EEG reporting for critically unwell patients as part of this post, which at present is 1 week in 3.

**We have three newly emerging strategic objectives**:
1. Our People - to cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff
2. Our Patients - to be good or outstanding in everything we do
3. Our Population - to work seamlessly with our partners to improve lives

Clinical Neurophysiology will provide inpatient investigations from MMUH and the majority of outpatients will be scheduled in the main department, which will move to a refurbished location in Sandwell General Hospital. This will enable patients to be seen closer to home in a Treatment Centre rather than an acute hospital.

Research

The University of Birmingham would like to support research by offering two protected research PAs to recently appointed (within 18 months) consultants. Sessions will be prioritised for those with a commitment to research and an interest in an area of research that maps to University of Birmingham strengths. Support will be assessed on a competitive basis.

A bespoke mentoring/training programme along with a £5k training/consumables budget will be provided. Assuming good progress is made the Research PAs will be for 3 years. In keeping with our track-record of supporting the development of colleagues, we anticipate that the appointees will be able to raise research funding to support their research time beyond the 3-year period.
