**Main Purpose of Role**

To examine drugs casework for the identification and quantification of suspected controlled substances. Use of analytical equipment to analyse casework samples to produce and interpret findings for reporting purposes. Interpret and collate scientific findings into Streamlined Forensic Reports (SFR) for court purposes. Assist in the creation of a Drugs Laboratory to include Validation, Accreditation and Quality Assurance.

**Key Responsibilities**
- Demonstrate an understanding of all current and emerging drug related legislation including Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, Misuse of Drugs Regulations (including amendments and additions) and associated legislation
- Assist in the creation of a Drugs Laboratory to include Validation, Accreditation and Quality Assurance
- To assist in the creation of suitable SOPs for the Laboratory
- Manage and prioritise personal and team workload in relation to submissions involving the analysis of drugs of abuse through the use of the internal Forensic Case Management system
- Tailor casework strategies to specific investigations and time constraints
- Oversee and coordinate the provision of rapid drug testing for remand purposes reprioritising cases where necessary
- Interpret and collate scientific findings into Streamlined Forensic Reports (SFR) for court purposes
- Peer review casework strategies, finding and interpretations to ensure quality and consistency
- Provide information to Police colleagues for seizures and submissions of controlled substances
- Be responsible for the integrity, confidentiality, security and continuity of exhibits, including their return while under ownership
- Ensure all work meets the required quality and Health & Safety standards, raising any potential issues and performing Risk Assessments where necessary
- Ensure housekeeping and cleanliness of the laboratory is maintained
- Fully adhere to the Forensic Regulator’s Code of Practice
- To be aware of responsibilities and comply with all relevant policies, procedures and legislation pertaining to WMP
- To ensure compliance with Force Policy on Equality and Diversity matters
- To provide Evidence to the Court when required to do so as directed by a Judge, Barristers or Solicitors.

Experience
**Essentials**
- Experience in the management, organisation and prioritisation of own and team workload with mínimal supervision
- Experience of working on own initiative, raising issues, investigating problems and developing solutions and actions to resolve them
- Demonstrate attention to detail and integrity at all times
- Possess excellent communication skills (both verbal and written)
- Be conversant with Microsoft Office and have excellent computer literacy skills
- At least 10 years’ experience in the forensic analysis of drugs
- Educated to degree level within a related Science discipline
- Experience working in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory
- Previous experience of the creation of a Drugs Laboratory to include Validation, Accreditation, Quality Assurance and creation of SOPs
- Experience in the examination, analysis and reporting of drugs casework for court purposes to include analytical instrumentation such as GC-MS and FTIR

**Desirable**
- Demonstrate willingness to undertake Continued Professional Development (CPD)
- Hold a full UK Driving Licence

**Internal and External Contact**
- Staff within the Drug Expert Witness Team and the WMP Forensic Services Department
- All employees of West Midlands Police concerning Drug related enquires
- National Drug Expert Witness Teams, Forensic Suppliers, Police Forces and other external agencies via written and verbal communication
- Maintain written/verbal contact with any external providers/suppliers

**Special Conditions**
- The post holder will be required to work Monday to Friday and weekends. Working flexibly between hours of 7am and 6pm, and on occasions outside of core shift hours

**Vetting**

Successful applicants will be required to pass Recruitment Vetting and Counter Terrorism Clearance scrutiny prior to commencing their role, this will include a full background & financial disclosure as part of the vetting process.

**Medical**

Appointment to this role will be dependent upon successfully medical checks, which may include a drugs test and if required a fitness test.
