- Job description- We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated person to work at Hermitage Lock and on the River Great Ouse Navigation sites. As a lock keeper and waterways workforce team member you will be joining a dynamic team. Working a rota at Hermitage Lock to help operate the Lock and working alongside our workforce team in general ground maintenance tasks at other waterways site on the River Great Ouse system. The Lock Keeper side of the role will include regular weekend and Bank holiday working.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
Main Responsibilities include:

- Providing safe passage to boaters and managing activities on and around the lock site, associated structures and reach.
- Assisting colleagues and customers with local expertise and knowledge to ensure effective management of the navigation of the river.
- Operate and maintain Hermitage lock including the buildings, facilities, and grounds maintenance works. Assist the waterways workforce with the ground’s maintenance at other locks, moorings, and waterways sites in the surrounding area to provide a safe and clean environment for our customers.
- Maintaining and developing health & safety good practices.
- Developing and maintaining a strong customer service and acting as an ambassador for the Environment Agency.
- Liaising and working with professional partners
- Ensuring efficient record keeping and information storage
- Collecting customer payments including license sales and tolls and reconciling and managing petty cash.
- The team- The Waterways Team manage the navigation on the River Great Ouse and it's tributaries including the Rivers Cam, Lark, Little Ouse and Wissey, approximately 158 miles of navigable waterway including 23 self-service locks and 2 tidal manned locks, moorings and other navigation facilities. You'll be part of a wider team that manages all aspects of Navigation on the River Great Ouse System. This role will be based at our manned site - Hermitage Lock, Earith
- Experience/skills required Be able to perform outdoors physical and varied work.
- Effective delivery of small projects and programmes ensuring compliance with legislation and health & safety requirements; with particular reference to environment & heritage issues.
- Able to work in a customer facing role and be a part of an operational team.
- Deliver work to high standards and demonstrate great care in the quality and standard of your work.
- You will be a great communicator and have excellent customer service skills - you will be the face of the Environment Agency on our waterways and will handle all communication in a respectful manner.
- Any relevant environmental awareness e.g. awareness of invasive species on rivers.
- Experience in Countryside practice and inland boating skills
