Assay and Automation Research Associate

Job Description
General Summary:
The High Throughput Biology group provides critical support to multiple stages of drug discovery from delivering validated small molecule hits, screening support for hit-to-lead and lead optimisation projects, compound profiling and mechanism of action studies. The team uses a variety of automation platforms, liquid handling robots and laboratory equipment to undertake high throughput screening to drive preclinical drug discovery projects.
The team is currently looking to recruit a laboratory-based assay and automation associate. This is an excellent opportunity to utilise your current skillset to generate project critical data that will help us discover new medicines, whilst expanding your automation and assay biology skills side by side with our engineer and scientists.
This role will be part of the Integrative Biology department at our Oxford research site.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Works alongside our automation engineer to set up, program and maintain the automated screening facilities
- Conducts cell based assays on the automated systems, according to established methodology, with mínimal supervision
- Performs analysis of experimental data and interprets outcomes following established methodology
- Supports our scientists to transfer assays onto robotic systems, with oversight
- Troubleshoots routine technical problems within standard procedures and performs routine equipment maintenance
- Participates in planning of experiments and may perform some novel experiments with limited supervision, demonstrating responsible follow-up
- Proposes improvements to assay and automation processes
- Follows procedures from the literature, adapting them as necessary with oversight
- Presents experimental findings at group meetings
- Maintain high quality standards during experimental processes and record keeping
- Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge and Skills:
- Experience with automation, fluid handling or robotic systems, ideally using workstations from one or more of Hamilton, Tecan and Beckman Coulter
- Demonstrates reliable technical skills in cell based assays
- Exhibits reliable ability to interpret routine data
- Applies technical knowledge to optimise some procedures and processes
- Displays emerging ability to modify experimental designs and protocols to enable methodological improvement
- Experience with data analysis software (Prism, Genedata Screener) and generating compound dose-response curves, and familiar with assay statistics
- Work effectively with colleagues within the team, as well from cross functional disciplines (Chemistry, pharmacology, DMPK)
- Interest in programming languages
- Strong attention to detail and comfortable adhering to stringent protocols
- Ability to present results in oral and written reports
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors Degree (or equivalent degree) in biological science or related discipline
