**Role Context**

This position is a fixed-term contract of 12 months.

This role will be based with the Polish Expats Association and managed jointly with the Birmingham City Council Public Health People team. The Polish Expats Association is a non-profit organisation set up in October 2009 with the aim to support the adaptation and integration of Eastern European migrants in the UK. They aim to do this by empowering communities and improving the lives of migrants in the UK by offering different forms of support, information, and personal development.

The People team leads the specialist work on mental health and well-being, including suicide prevention. The People team support the Creating a Mentally Healthy City Forum which is a partnership group focused on developing our approach to improving the mental well-being of the population.

**Key responsibilities**

The purpose of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Community Engagement Officer is to support the Central & Eastern European communities to improve their mental health and well-being by experiencing mental health problems by working with the communities to identify needs and solutions. The post holder will share intelligence with Birmingham City Council Public Health and the Polish Expats Association and work to improve support for the communities. The post holder will:

- Project manage and coordinate the delivery of any possible projects arising from the mental health, well-being, and suicide prevention programme workstream. Ensuring projects are evidence-based where possible.
- Understand the local mental health, well-being and suicide prevention needs of the Central & Eastern European communities and define appropriate solutions and initiatives where required. This includes supporting the development of business cases for the funding of potential projects and the development of recommendations for the health needs assessment.
- To work with the Birmingham City Council Public Health People Team and the Polish Expats Association in supporting and influencing the development of external partners’ works and strategies to meet the needs of the Central and Eastern European communities.
- Carry out appropriate research and support the compilation of briefing papers/reports.

**Role responsibility**

The post holders will implement practical and rigorous approaches to ensure that work has an impact on health and well-being. This includes:

- To provide, maintain and disseminate intelligence gained through the work of the project to inform mental health, well-being and suicide prevention support for Central and Eastern European Communities.
- Communicate innovative solutions and best practices for mental health, well-being and suicide prevention problems to stakeholders.
- To work collaboratively with the Birmingham City Council’s People Team and the Polish Expats Association to support strategic partners and ensure that evidence-based approaches, such as the needs assessment that will be informed by community voices, are applied to future funding decisions for the Central and Eastern European communities.
- Working with communities so their voice informs a needs assessment that will then help determine future avenues of progression.
- Working towards reducing the stigma around mental health in the Central & Eastern European communities, and supporting the suicide prevention programme of work.
- Engage in discussions liaising between Birmingham City Council and the communities to support any future decision-making for mental health, well-being and suicide prevention work.
- To gain an understanding of what support the Central and Eastern European communities are aware of and/or are accessing to support their mental health and well-being.
- Liaise between Birmingham City Council and the communities to explore what obstacles are/may prevent the usage of support for mental health, well-being and suicide prevention.
- Creating resources to signpost to organisations that can offer mental health and well-being support to the communities.
- Ensure cultural competence in all work and relationships between Birmingham City Council, the Community Engagement Officer and partner organisations.
- Identifying mental health and well-being issues within the communities that need addressing and how that can be done.
