Cambridge, United Kingdom University of Cambridge Full time

Are you good at persuading people to come on board and stay on board with projects? Do you enjoy working as part of a collaborative team? Would you like to make an impact in improving research culture?

We are interested in how improvements might be made to the culture that surrounds academic research. We are therefore seeking a second Engagement Co-ordinator to join the Action Research on Research Culture (ARRC) project team.

Research culture describes the environment in which research happens. There are many challenges with the research culture in academia, and universities, funders and other stakeholders in the higher education sector are exploring ways to improve it. The ARRC project is an international collaboration which will build an evidence base for some of the most commonly proposed solutions to problems in research culture. We will focus on narrative CVs in academic recruitment, tools that support development conversations, and the challenges surrounding precarity in academic careers. The project team will combine rigorous research on research with a focus on translating findings in to actions that will make an impact across the national and international higher education sector. It is an exciting opportunity to work in a new collaborative team, combining the expertise of researchers with other professional staff, and co-creating a range of new approaches to progress the research culture agenda.

International collaborating institutions are the University of Edinburgh, Leiden University in the Netherlands, Freie Universität Berlin in Germany, and ETH Zurich in Switzerland. As the project progresses, research will be conducted in these partner institutions, and there will be the opportunity for the role-holder to collaborate closely with, and build networks across, colleagues from these institutions, including the opportunity to visit and spend time at some of the campuses.

The research conducted within the ARRC project will engage a large number of participants, including in live recruitment processes and development programmes. The Engagement Co-ordinator will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth running of the experimental work by recruiting participants, briefing them, and maintaining their engagement throughout the life of the experiments. The role would suit somebody with excellent organisational and interpersonal skills, with prior experience of designing and delivering materials, briefings and workshops for an academic audience. There will be opportunities to contribute to wider engagement and communication activities within the project. Previous experience in a role, or a demonstrated interest in, the academic landscape and the research culture agenda within that would be an advantage.

This role is available as a full-time position, on a fixed-term basis until 31 August 2025 in the first instance, as determined by project funding.

Interviews will be held w/c 3rd July 2023

The University has a responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK.
