Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has a Band 5 vacancy for a Trainee Respiratory/Sleep Clinical Physiologist.
This is an opportunity for a highly motivated, enthusiastic individual to join our friendly and professional team of Respiratory and Sleep Physiologists. We are a busy department providing a wide range of investigations in both Respiratory and Sleep.
This role will support the Clinical Lead in Respiratory/Sleep in developing and delivering diagnostics within the Community Diagnostic Hubs. Travel between the sites will be required so the ability to drive is desirable.

The unit provides comprehensiveClinical Respiratory and Sleep Physiological Investigation and Therapeutic services to patients of all ages from a large range of departments suffering from a wide variety of medical disorders including those which may be respiratory, cardiac or neurological in nature.
JOB SUMMARY
- Perform a range of routine and complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the two disciplines of Clinical Respiratory and Clinical Sleep Physiology.
- Undertake an extensive in-house training programme and obtain relevant professional body examinations in Respiratory/Sleep Physiology
- To plan and prioritise own workload.
- Responsible for the day-to-day management of the Respiratory and Sleep Services, in the absence of the Lead Physiologist.
- Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to include - Spirometry, F/V Loops, Reversibility, Transfer Factor, Lung Volumes, 6 minute walk, Hypoxic Challenge testing, MIP/MEP, Respiratory Channel Study Set-up, Respiratory Channel Analysis, CPAP maintenance, CPAP New Loan
- Undertake interpretation of results, provision of reports
- Undertake the education and training of Clinical Respiratory physiologists and other healthcare professionals including medical staff within the designated specialist areas.
- Responsible for the provision including audit, research and development, procurement and quality assurance of all equipment in designated specialist areas.
- Provide advice to clinicians.
- Work collaboratively and co-operatively on a day-to-day basis with others to ensure that service needs are met.
ROLE OF THE DEPARTMENT
- Provides comprehensiveClinical Respiratory and Sleep Physiological Investigation and Therapeutic services to patients of all ages from a large range of specialties suffering from a wide variety of medical disorders including those which may be respiratory, cardiac or neurological in nature.
- Provides therapeutic service for patients with sleep related breathing disorders.
- The department is currently extending into the community, offering both Sleep and Respiratory Diagnostics at Hubs.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
CLINICAL
- Continually monitor and maintain high professional standards, of Clinical Physiological services to patients and to initiate remedial action where necessary.
- Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies, to ensure services meet changing healthcare needs.
- Provide support and assistance to Clinical Physiological staff, in dealing with difficult and conflicting situations including those that are of a clinical/professional nature.
- May initiate, participate, plan and implement policies.
- Plan, perform, and provide reports on a wide range of Respiratory physiological investigations to patients of all age groups, without supervision, employing current standard, highly complex specialist and advanced techniques, taking appropriate action where necessary.
- Plan, perform, and provide reports on sleep investigations on patients referred by primary and secondary care without supervision, employing current standard and advanced techniques and taking appropriate action where necessary.
- May initiate and participate with audit programmes.
- Participate with research and development programmes.
- Undertake continuous professional development, appropriate to the range of Clinical Physiology services to patients.
- Undertake simple fault remedies, cleaning and maintenance of equipment and ensure these are in good working order. In case of equipment failure effectively communicate with the Service Manager and in their absence, the manufacturers and service contractors to minimise any interruption of service.
MANAGERIAL / LEADERSHIP
- Contribute to the management and leadership for Clinical Physiologists in the Respiratory/Sleep clinic.
- Responsible for the efficient and effective use of resources in designated specialist areas of service.
- Responsible for ordering and control of stock levels in designated specialist areas of service.
