**Job summary**:
We are a joint unit between the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and the Department of Health & Social Care (DHSC). While this role formally sits in DSIT, all staff in OLS work across both DHSC and DSIT, supporting and delivering on the objectives for both Departments and both Secretaries of State - something that makes our roles even more interesting.

This is an important job with a huge opportunity to have a positive impact for the life sciences sector overall, for companies and for health outcomes in the UK. It is an area of significant interest to No 10 and HM Treasury, and plays a crucial role in delivering the government’s ambition to make the UK a global science superpower.

There is a really fun mix of things in the job - from developing a pipeline of investment opportunities in the UK, to negotiating at global boardroom level to land specific investments, to engaging across the health system at a senior level. All the while leading a high-performing, ambitious team.

You need not have health or life sciences expertise right now - although it would be great if you did - but I do want someone who has the aptitude for building deep expertise in this field. Experience of working in a commercial environment and negotiating agreements with industry or other external stakeholders on behalf of Government or similar organisations would also be helpful.

**Job description**:
As Deputy Director, Life Sciences Investment and Engagement, you will be an outstanding SCS leader for a high-performing investment and engagement team with responsibility for developing and delivering the UK’s strategy to boost life sciences investment in the UK. You will make a significant contribution to the Government’s priorities to make the UK a global hub for life sciences, deliver the private sector contribution to the 2.4% R&D spending commitment for this Parliament, develop partnerships to bring cutting-edge treatments to NHS patients, and boost health resilience for future pandemics.

This is a high-profile area with significant interest from Ministers across DSIT, DHSC and DBT, senior officials in No 10 and HMT as well as senior figures in science, industry, academia and the charitable sector. You will develop and manage a pipeline of exciting investment opportunities; lead a multi-disciplinary team of policy, clinical, analyst and commercial experts; represent the UK in senior sector-level engagement; lead negotiating teams on investment opportunities; inform the policy development to grow the sector; and be SRO for the operational delivery of investment programmes.

You will have: the intellectual and strategic capability to build and develop plans to deliver major investments from the life sciences industry over the coming years; the personal impact and credibility to build relationships with and land deals with leading industry figures, including at global Board level, as well as Ministers and senior officials within Government; the leadership abilities to drive delivery of investment projects or policy changes through a range of teams within Government as well as by inspiring and supporting your own team of civil servants and sector specialists; and the commercial awareness and skills to spot opportunities in the market and negotiate major investment deals.
