The Belay Foundation places Specialist Support Workers in the homes of families whose children have previously been in local authority care. This position is supported by Arc Adoption.

A fantastic opportunity is available to support a 6-year-old boy and his family for five hours over a couple of evenings every week.

Tom* is an inquisitive, joyful, funny train addict He loves to entertain others, is endlessly curious about all sorts of things - but his number one fascination is always transport. He can chat for hours about makes of cars, and loves the airport - but trains and the metro are simply the best Exuding noise and drama, Tom is a livewire who enjoys being out and about and is great company - but his high energy can also be exhausting. Tom, his older brother Logan*, and his parents all live with the impact of Tom’s trauma from his earliest years, which affects his capacity to sit still, follow orders, focus, participate in group activities, and manage his emotions. The role is support the family by spending time with Tom, building a trusting relationship, playing with him at home and at the park, and providing opportunities for Logan to have his own individual time with his parents.

Working with Tom and his family will be a really rewarding opportunity to develop your experience and understanding in working directly with younger children with complex developmental needs. It is essential you are happy and willing to invest time and energy in the family and are available for a minimum of twelve months.

You will have experience of working with children, with an interest and preferably experience in either the developmental impacts of attachment and trauma or in supporting children with other neurodiversities. You will need to be mature, emotionally grounded, curious, patient, able to maintain effective, responsive boundaries, and available for a minimum of twelve months. Access to a car is not essential - the Metro and bus stops are nearby - but you will need to be confident out and about with a six-year-old.

To support you The Belay Foundation will offer training in attachment and trauma, safeguarding, professional boundaries, regulating techniques as well as other any other preparation that will help you in the role. You will also receive ongoing support, peer supervision and clinical supervision.
