**Job summary**:

- This position is based at Crewe, Manchester**Job description**:
Do you have a passion for nature and the environment? Do you want to make a real difference and secure significant environmental gains in the present and the future? Do you enjoy working in a team? Can you see yourself advising communities and customers to maximise gains for the Natural Environment?

If this appeals to you, a career at Natural England offers rewarding opportunities to secure environmental improvements and play your part in creating a better future for people and nature.

The priority work Natural England is delivering includes:

- Establishing a Nature Recovery Network to help wildlife thrive;
- Monitoring environmental changes to identify and help reduce the effects of climate change;
- Working with farmers and landowners to develop greener food production methods;
- Advising on plans for new developments to maximise gains for nature, and
- Providing ways for people to better connect with nature, including green social prescribing.

We are the Government’s Adviser for the natural environment, playing a vital role in delivering the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, an ambitious vision which brings new opportunities to protect and enhance and to achieve real outcomes for the environment.

We provide environmental leadership across an area of 6 million people and home to some magnificent natural assets, where Nature Recovery and Partnerships are at the heart of everything we do. Restoring habitats, reconnecting the natural environment and connecting people with nature across the Lancashire uplands of West Pennine Moors and Bowland Fells, the wetlands and rivers of Cheshire, the wildlife-rich Irish Sea coast and urban heartland of Greater Manchester and Liverpool City Region.

In 2023 we have an ambitious plan to build a resilient natural environment. We want to support flourishing landscapes that are a source of pride, rural employment, access and enjoyment. We want to continue to develop and expand our farm advice to deliver more benefits across mosaics of habitats for biodiversity, water quality, air quality, flood management, climate change and the wider farmed environment, and to develop Countryside Stewardship agreements with local Nature Recovery and Species Recovery.

Job description

This is a challenging but exciting role; requiring multitasking and the ability to work to deadlines. We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to work closely with farmers and land managers to promote and implement practical measures to enhance natures recovery whilst balancing the need for food production.

The role will deliver a range of activities, including but not limited to:

- Keep up to date on emerging new scheme initiatives and financial incentives for farmers (to look after and improve the environment) that are relevant to the role.
- Combine ecological and farm management/business considerations to solve problems and develop land management proposals that will work in practice.
- Provide professional advice and fulfil NE’s statutory duties on protected sites to enhance and improve their condition.
- Promote nature conservation, protecting biodiversity and identifying opportunities to deliver benefits for thriving wildlife, people and nature, and tackle the effects of climate change.
- Ensure timely recording of interactions, advice and support given;
- You will play a key role as part of a bigger cohesive team; enjoy working closely with colleagues, but also thrive when working independently and taking responsibility for your own projects.

**Applications from those with a background in farming, agriculture or other sectors outside of ecology/conservation are very welcome, provided an understanding and interest in the fundamental principles of farmland conservation and ecology can be demonstrated.**

**Benefits**

Wherever possible Natural England accommodates requests for both full-time and part-time hours and other flexible working patterns to help employees achieve a good work/life balance and maintain their health and wellbeing.
