South West England, United Kingdom The National Trust Full time

About This Role

We are seeking a dedicated Conservation Ecologist to play a pivotal role in shaping our ecological vision across a diverse portfolio of properties spanning Somerset.

Our Landscape and Mission

This expansive landholding encompasses over 6,700 hectares, encompassing Exmoor, Quantock Hills, Mendip Hills, and the North Somerset Coast. You'll be working within four designated protected landscapes, safeguarding areas rich in wildlife and historical significance. Our mission is to protect and enhance these unique ecosystems, supporting a wide array of nationally and internationally important species and habitats.

Your Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning and execution of nature conservation monitoring, surveys, and data recording across our properties. Your work will directly contribute to achieving our ambitious land management goals in alignment with The National Trust's nature monitoring framework.
  • Provide expert ecological advice to site managers, contributing to species recovery initiatives, reintroduction programs, and habitat restoration projects.
  • Generate high-quality reports detailing the condition and status of species and habitats across our diverse portfolio.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with a range of stakeholders, including colleagues, partners, tenants, volunteers, consultants, and external organizations to support your conservation efforts.

Who We Seek

  • A deep understanding of ecology and land management practices. This could be demonstrated through a degree in ecology or related natural sciences, or extensive experience working in the countryside within an ecological or conservation field.
  • Proven experience in providing evidence-based advice on habitat management and creation for nature conservation purposes, including expertise in protected species and sites.
  • Excellent identification skills for British plant and animal communities, along with hands-on experience in standard survey and monitoring techniques, such as UKHab.
  • A strong ability to translate survey and monitoring data into actionable land management guidance and plans.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and grant schemes applicable across England.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, enabling you to build effective internal and external relationships with staff, volunteers, and partners.
  • Proficiency in IT tools, including GIS and databases.
  • Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills, capable of producing comprehensive reports for project management and engaging audiences through various channels, such as social media and marketing materials.
