The Role

Are you a contemporary artist with an exciting practice that engages with the moving image? Do you have the drive and enthusiasm to teach hands-on at one of the UK’s best art schools? If so, we’d love to hear from you.

We have an exciting opportunity for a practising visual artist to join us as a Lecturer in Fine Art. You will join our vibrant Fine Art community and teach into our BA and MFA Fine Art programmes. Applications are welcome from artists whose creative practice primarily involves working with digital or analogue approaches to the moving image, or new technologies in the moving image.

You should be an enthusiast for innovative, inclusive, hands-on approaches to teaching Fine Art and be able to work with students across a broad range of practices and at different levels.

**As a member of our dynamic team you will**: be committed to excellent teaching at all levels of our BA and MFA programmes work as a key member of our fine art team, taking on your share of academic roles within the department.

This appointment is a 0.25fte teaching and scholarship post with an anticipated start date of September 2023. The University has developed an Teaching and Scholarship Role Profiles document which summarises the range of activities that colleagues may be expected to perform.

Fine Art at Newcastle
Fine Art at Newcastle is amongst the highest ranked UK art schools in all the major league tables and achieved an exceptional performance in the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF2021). We are a community of staff and students who are artists, curators and art historians. Collectively, our research and practice contribute to a vibrant creative culture and discourse both within Newcastle University and the wide art ecology. Our Fine Art BA is a four-year studio-based programme that encourages creativity, autonomy, and experimentation. Our staff teach and conduct world-leading research across the visual arts ( Fine Art Research at Newcastle ). Students are encouraged to develop their own productive relationship between studio practice and art historical, curatorial and contextual studies. Our renowned professional practice modules, LifeWorkArt, are woven into the undergraduate programme, enabling students to engage directly with the creative eco-system of the region as they study.
The department is base for around 240 undergraduate, 16 postgraduate (MFA) students and 25 PhD students. Fine Art is part of the School of Arts and Cultures.

Key Accountabilities
Contribute to the delivery and development of studio-based modules on the four year Fine Art BA undergraduate course and the two year MFA course
Maintain an active profile and dynamic trajectory as an artist and teacher who, engages the public with their work and achieves creative impact within society
Contribute to leadership and academic duties necessary for the successful running of the Fine Art degree programmes

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Broad knowledge of Fine Art practice, processes and methods
Specialist knowledge, through your practice, of fine art and the moving image (e.g. new technologies, film, video, animation, digital or analogue)
Ability to respond positively to students working across a wide range of art practice
Excellent interpersonal skills, including those required for pastoral care of home and international students from a variety of academic and social backgrounds
A track record of practice-led creative practice and an outstanding artistic trajectory commensurate with your career stage
experience of teaching fine art in HE at undergraduate or postgraduate level
Desirable
Active participation in national and/or international networks
