The Role

Newcastle University is a world-class research-intensive university that aims to provide an outstanding educational experience to its students. Newcastle University’s Biosciences Institute (NUBI) hosts a multi-disciplinary community of researchers who are focussed on the fundamental biology of life to obtain mechanistic understanding of human diseases and improve human health. NUBI harbours state-of-the-art facilities including a purpose-built laboratory for biomedical mass spectrometry hosting many high-end mass spectrometers.

You will be expected to deliver active programmes of research and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision within the School of Biomedical, Nutritional and Sport Sciences. You will take on leadership roles as appropriate, including mentoring of other colleagues, curriculum development and engagement activities.

The University has developed an Academic Job Summary Guidance document which summarises the range of activities that academic staff may be expected to perform.

Key Accountabilities
To consistently publish metabolomics research in peer-reviewed publications at a 3* level, with significant contribution at the 4* level
To disseminate research findings through national and international conferences and other avenues
To attract funding for research from a range of peer reviewed external sources
To contribute towards the development and running of cutting-edge research projects
Contribute to the strategic development and implementation of metabolomics research in the laboratory for biomedical mass spectrometry, the Institute and Faculty
To lead and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment; supervise undergraduate and master’s dissertations and postgraduate research students in microbiology and related areas, providing pastoral support and guidance when needed
Develop and sustain an independent research group that operates with a collaborative team-science ethic and in which all team members are recognised and rewarded for their contributions and are provided the opportunity for career advancement
Promote a research culture that encourages and celebrates a rich diversity in its workforce and that upholds the highest standards for its research integrity, data reproducibility and collaborative spirit
To undertake other duties as deemed necessary, including participation in relevant Institute, Faculty and University committees and activities as detailed by the Institute Dean

Lecturer Level Appointment

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Strong background in metabolomics within a strategic research area of FMS such as (but not limited to) cancer, ageing, rare diseases, mitochondrial disease or microbiology
Track record of success in bidding for and attracting research funding, appropriate for career stage
Excellent record of publications suitable for REF submission
Evidence of ability to carry out high quality quantitative research within agreed timelines, meeting project milestones
Knowledge of research ethics, good research practice and research governance
Excellent written and verbal communication skills (including presentations to academic/non-academic audiences, written outputs)
Evidence of ability, and willingness, to work as part of a team and on own initiative
Experience of leading and/or contributing to the delivery of, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes, appropriate for career stage
