Mental Health Link Worker - Newcastle

The Mental Health Link Worker (MHLW) is a post under contract with VITA Health Group in partnership with the NHS and provides Newcastle Talking Therapies mental health services to support Newcastle residents.
This innovative role is to meet the needs of PROPS carers impacted by someone else’s substance misuse, specifically to those who are struggling with mental health issues and
Newcastle residents who require the support of Newcastle’s IAPT services - Improving Access to Psychological Therapies.

**Mental Health Link Worker - PROPS North East**
**Reports to**:Operations Manager
**Location**:Newcastle
**Job Purpose**
The Mental Health Link Worker (MHLW) is a post under contract with VITA Health Group, in partnership with the NHS, and provides Newcastle Talking Therapies mental health services to support Newcastle residents.
The MHLW will provide direct support to carers over the age of 16 years who are engaged and accessing PROPS North East services for issues relating to their family members or friends’ substance misuse.
This role is to meet the needs of PROPS carers impacted by someone else’s substance misuse, specifically those who are struggling with mental health issues.
The MHLW will assist in the delivery of part of the PROPS intervention to facilitate the Enriching
Lives programme to support carers to live fulfilling lives outside of their caring role and reduce the need for primary care services.
The MHLW will work with carers and provide one-to-one emotional support to build resilience to increase confidence and self-awareness around personal health and well-being, referring directly into Newcastle Talking Therapies services if the need for additional mental health support is recognised.
In addition, to raise awareness about personal health and well-being and health inequalities, the
MHLW will host engagement events across the Newcastle area to promote the mental health support offer from and make direct referral into Newcastle Talking Therapies.
This work contributes to the PROPS vision of working towards sustainable whole-family recovery and supporting the mental health needs of the communities we work in to reduce health inequalities.
Duties are not exclusive. Duties will be reviewed where necessary.
**Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities**:
- To support carers to make sustained improvements in their health and wellbeing and fulfilment of sustainable whole family recovery.
- Adopt an assertive outreach approach to engage carers to gain support in their own right.
- To adhere to the implementation of risk management procedures (child and adult safeguarding protocols) taking personal responsibility for keeping up to date on the requirements of these procedures.
- Facilitate a culture of challenging negative behaviours and discrimination around mental health.
- Ensure that all carers and local stakeholders are aware of the range of services offered by
- IAPT services and PROPS and promote these within the wider community.
- Provide a direct referral route to IAPT services.
- To work collaboratively and proactively with other members of staff and volunteers to ensure that services are fully coordinated and are working collectively towards the visions held by VITA Health Group and PROPS North East.
- To deliver one-to-one work, and emotional support to empower, educate and support carer choice and the promotion of health and wellbeing.
- To create positive working relationships with partners across Newcastle, promoting IAPT services and creating seamless referral pathways to Newcastle Talking Therapies.
- To work in close partnership with Jet and Search, co-collaborators on the VITA Health Group contract.
- To be responsible for performance management at an individual level through self
- management; delivery of goals and tasks set; delivery of contractual requirements, targets and outcomes; and reporting progress.
- To be able to demonstrate an ability to work on your own initiative, be flexible and work to tight deadlines. To prioritise designated tasks on a daily basis and adapt quickly to an environment with changing demands.
