**Post: Carer Information and Advice Worker (Mental Health)**
**Responsible to**:Adult Services Manager
**Hours Per Week (HPW)**:22.2
**Salary**:NJC scale 17-20: starting salary, £26,357 (full-time equivalent), actual salary, £15,814 (22.2 HPW)
**Function of the Post**
To provide emotional, practical and advocacy support to carers dealing with, but not limited to, mental health issues, in Newcastle. To network and signpost carers where appropriate, and to identify and work with groups of carers who are under supported, ensuring that the specific needs of carers are met. To empower carers to access services.
Agree to and meet project and personal objectives.
Contribute to the effective and efficient operation of Newcastle Carers and support the Chief Executive and staff team in the delivery of the organisations aims and objects. The post holder will ensure the highest standards of service delivery in accordance with the policies, ensuring that the service is appropriate, sensitive and accessible.
**Key Responsibilities**
1. Providing emotional, practical and advocacy support to mental health carers in Newcastle.
2. Networking and signposting mental health carers where appropriate.
3. Identifying and working with groups of mental health carers who are under supported.
4. Empowering mental health carers to access services.
5. Agreeing to and meeting project and personal objectives.
6. Working closely with Mental Health professionals to aid in the:
- development of systems which will help to identify mental health carers
- provision of support to mental health carers
**Key Tasks**
**1. Service Delivery**
1.1. To carry a personal caseload as determined by the Service Manager.
1.2. To register new mental health carers in line with centre policies and procedures.
1.3. To empower, and work with mental health carers, providing appropriate support to meet individual needs. Where required, liaise with professionals to access appropriate support etc.
1.4. To provide advocacy for the carer through attending relevant health and social care and educational meetings as appropriate to ensure the mental health carers needs are being considered.
1.5. To organise, and support, special interest groups.
1.6. To assist in the identification of training needs of mental health carers.
1.9. To offer specific support, information, assistance, and advocacy to mental health carers and their families on an individual needs led basis.
1.10. To assist with the identification of break opportunities for mental health carers.
1.11. To maintain records to support the work of Newcastle Carers including report writing, carer records, correspondence, and monitoring.
1.12. To ensure that decisions or judgments which entail a high-level of risk are referred to the Service Manager/Chief Officer
1.13. To undertake any other reasonable requests for work as directed by the Service Manager/
Chief Officer.
**2. Resources**
2.1. To make reasonable requests for expenditure within agreed project budgets.
2.2. To promote and ensure a sound and safe working environment.
2.3. To notify the Service Manager when resource problems affecting service delivery occur.
**3. Staffing**
3.1. To attend and participate in regular supervision in accordance with organisational policy and procedures.
3.2. To identify own training needs with the Service Manager.
3.3. To attend appropriate training and provide formal feedback to other staff
3.4. To attend and participate in annual appraisals and agree annual objectives.
3.5. To assist in and participate in developmental opportunities.
**4. Quality Assurance**
4.1. To work to agreed explicit service standards as determined by the Service Manager
4.2. To work to agreed targets as set by the Service Manager.
4.3. To assist in the monitoring and maintenance of agreed standards the evaluation of service delivery as directed by the Service Manager.
**5. Developmental Opportunities**
5.1. To support the centre to make links with mental health groups and provide information and support to mental health carers within those groups.
5.2. Build links with relevant personnel in health, and social care services and other organisations to ensure mental health carers’ issues affect service development.
5.3. To work with Community Mental Health teams, and in-patient ward teams, to help
identify mental health carers and ensure that support is provided for those carers.
5.4. To identify and work with potential areas for service development from the Centre Business Plan.
5.5. To work in conjunction with statutory and voluntary sector partners, and Centre Management to help deliver the Business Plan in relation to the Carer Support Project
5.6. To contribute to the development of the future Centre Business Plans
5.7. To assist in evaluating the Carer Support Project
5.8. In consultation with young carers, assist in the analysis of training needs,
