**Function of the Post**

To work with young carers using an outcomes focused approach to help them have the same opportunities as other children and young people. To provide whole family support to promote positive relationships and insight into family roles and responsibilities, and to support change in the caring role where appropriate. To support young carers in a group work setting.

To work proactively with relevant organisations in Newcastle to identify, inform and support young carers.

To contribute to the effective and efficient operation of Newcastle Carers and support the Chief Executive and staff team in the delivery of the organisations aims and objects. The post holder will ensure the highest standards of service delivery in accordance with the policies, ensuring that the service is appropriate, sensitive and accessible.

**Key Responsibilities and Duties**
- To undertake statutory young carers assessments (training will be given)
- To work with and provide appropriate information, advice and support to young carers and their families to identify and address individual and family needs and any inappropriate caring tasks, and to empower them to achieve positive outcomes.
- To carry a personal caseload and maintain records in accordance with Newcastle Carers requirements including report writing, carer records, correspondence and monitoring and evaluation systems.
- To provide informal advocacy for young carers and their families through attending relevant health and social care and educational meetings as appropriate, to ensure the young carer’s needs are taken into account.
- To liaise with, refer to, and work in partnership with relevant organisations to ensure whole family support is being provided to the young carer and their family.
- To involve young carers in the planning of activities/groups to ensure they meet the needs of children and young people accessing the service.
- To support the facilitation of group sessions for young carers offering information, training and activities, and encouraging peer support.
- Working with communications colleagues, to create and maintain on-line information resources for young carers e.g. via Facebook, website information, links to national web-based resources etc.
- To work with organisations such as schools, colleges, play/youth groups, Job Centre Plus, GP practices, Children’s Social Care, and voluntary sector organisations to raise awareness of the needs of young carers, promote good practice and encourage referrals of young carers for support.
- To support promotion and awareness raising of the needs of young carers in Newcastle, for example within Strategic partnerships.
- To organise events and activities for and with carers that promote the aims and objects of Newcastle Carers.
- To ensure that decisions or judgements which entail a high level of risk are referred to the Chief Executive.

- To participate in approved training events to enhance the work of the post holder or Newcastle Carers.

**Knowledge, Experience and Skills**

**Essential**

**Desirable**

1.A minimum of 2 years’ experience of working with children, young people and their families in challenging circumstances.

2.NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent relevant qualification or experience)

3.Experience of facilitating/running group sessions for children and young people.

4.Experience of managing a varied and challenging workload, including carrying a personal caseload.

5.Understand the issues that affect young carers and their families, the impact this has on them and the legislation and policies that impact their lives.

6.Excellent all-round communication skills with the ability to develop and maintain constructive relationships with a wide range of people and services, and to write and present reports.

7.Knowledge and experience of working practices within Health, Social Care and Education.

9.Knowledge of and a strong commitment to equality and diversity.

10.Have a flexible approach to working hours.

11.Knowledge and understanding of the voluntary and community sector.

12.Commitment to the aims and principles of Newcastle Carers.

13.Be a strong team member but with the ability to work independently.
