An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual with lived experience of a diagnosis of autism to join our team as a peer support worker.

The successful applicant will work within a multidisciplinary team to deliver pre
- and post-diagnostic support to autistic adults (age 16+) in Sheffield. This is a newly commissioned role in the Sheffield Adult Autism Service (SAANS) and an exciting opportunity to use your lived-experience to improve outcomes for other autistic adults through direct support (supporting with group and individual interventions) and indirectly via training of staff across the trust.

We will support your learning as a peer support worker and access an ImROC training programme to develop skills to equip you for a career in peer support.

Co-production is at the heart of our service and will be vital within the role of peer support worker, in terms of the development of new pathways in our service.
- To draw upon lived experience to enhance the approaches offered to service users before and after diagnosis of ASD at SAANS
- To support people to access appropriate support whilst waiting for a diagnostic assessment of ASD
- To support other services within SHSC to provide autism friendly environments
- To work with people face to face or remotely to establish safe and effective relationships
- To work closely with colleagues as part of the team supporting a service user following diagnosis of ASD
- To work with a diverse group of people either in groups or individually
- To support the use of psychological strategies: active listening, problem solving and coping strategies, support for self-management, self-help and self-care
- To help service users engage with and build connections and a sense of belonging to their local communities and meaningful activities
- To support local communities within Sheffield to understand autism and the services available to people
- To work as part of the team supporting the families or carers of service users
- To support service users to build their understanding of autism and to develop strategies to manage their difficulties
- To co-produce and deliver training
- To assist in the audit and evaluation of services provided

We are a outpatient clinic set in the leafy suburb of Nether Edge in Sheffield. We are a friendly team who are passionate about working with neurodiversity and value the contributions of neurodiverse staff and communities.

We have on street parking, bus links and lockable bike storage making the service accessible.

The post holder will work flexibly in collaboration with others to undertake a number of duties. Below are some examples:
**Working with service users and their families or carers**:

- To draw upon your lived experience to enhance the approaches offered to service users before and after their assessment and diagnosis of ASD
- Understand a person’s experiences in relation to their autism
- Ensure that people are treated with dignity and respect
- Aspire to instil hope and optimism
- To work as part of the team providing approaches to support the service user around their autism diagnosis
- Build and maintain safe and effective therapeutic recovery relationships
- Support people using services and staff to develop self-management plans and implement them collaboratively and creatively
- To work as part of the team supporting the families or carers of someone using services
- Understand a person’s coping strategies and strengths and support people to use these at times of distress or difficulty
- To enable service users to develop self-management of their condition taking an empowering approach to promote independence (‘doing with’ and empowering, ‘not ‘doing for’ people)
- To help service users engage with and build connections and a sense of belonging to their local communities and meaningful activities
- To support local communities within Sheffield to understand autism and the services available to people
- To recognise increasing risk to alert significant others and the team to respond as needed
- Be responsible for maintaining up-to-date records to reflect service users’ care and support
- To report untoward incidents and areas of concern as soon as they arise
- Promote anti-discriminatory activities

**Working with colleagues as part of a team**:

- To work collaboratively with other members of the teams and to build and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues
- Support colleagues by promoting systems of work, which promote safe practice
- Contribute to review systems and team meetings

**Co-produce psychoeducation and skills-based groups**:

- To co-produce and facilitate psychoeducation and skills-based groups alongside clinicians designed for service users to support their understanding of their diagnosis and develop management strategies
