**Student Experience & Support (SES)** is responsible for student engagement activities and provision of student support services, which includes the University’s one-stop-shop, askUS. SES gives students the opportunity to complement their academic learning with a programme of personal growth and support.

At the heart of our work is a focus on the student experience in a creative student-led, flexible and innovative way, whilst anticipating, engaging and responding to the needs of a diverse student community. To ensure that all students can take best advantage of these exceptional opportunities, the askUS service offers a variety of support and development services for students, including:

- Employability skills and careers guidance
- Enterprise skills and volunteering
- Disability and inclusion support
- Counselling and Wellbeing (mental and emotional health) skills and support
- Support for care leavers, carers, LGBTQAI
- General enquiries

Approximately 20% of students at Salford disclose a disability. As an institution, we have an inclusive and accessible framework which underpins teaching and learning, and we are committed to developing the inclusive student experience. The Disability Inclusion Service works with students to reduce the barriers that they may experience with their learning and implement support strategies. This may include a Reasonable Adjustment Plans and funded support, which is implemented based on an assessment of the student's needs. The service meets with prospective learners over the summer and facilitates 2 ‘Transition Events’ to ensure that they get off to the best possible start to their studies.

Working as a Study Assistant you will be working with disabled students from the University of Salford to provide specialist support.

You will be providing orientation support, which aims to help disabled students transition to higher education at Salford, working closely with internal services at the University. Periods of transition and changes to routine can be particularly challenging for learners who experience social communication difficulties and anxiety.

Some learners will require ongoing support throughout the year. Where ongoing support needs are identified, the student will work with the Disability Inclusion Service to agree a plan to support them to access their studies.

**Tasks.**

Some of the roles you may be asked to undertake are;
- **Campus/transition support**_
- Providing students in welcome/induction week with support to navigate/access the campus
- Promoting the independence and social engagement of students through encouragement and support to take part in welcome activities
- Working with students to understand any activities that they have an interest in
- Supporting students to understand timetables and familiarisation with the campus
- Answer any questions that a student may have about general day-to-day living as a student, attending classes, seminars and practical sessions
- Ability to signpost to, where relevant, and promote University Support Services

- Provide support to students who may have a physical disability
- Offer practical support, such as carrying bags or equipment, opening doors and pushing a wheelchair
- Meeting students at their taxi or on-campus accommodation to support them to class.
- **Study assistance**_
- Providing ongoing practical support complemented by strategies promoting skills development and independent learning.
- Attending classes with a students and providing support in situations where anxiety levels may increase, avoiding escalation.
- Working with the students to address any issues that may arise and signpost to relevant internal services and teaching colleagues.
