As part of a significant further investment in Computer Science, the University of York is seeking to appoint an internationally excellent Chair in Systems Safety to join the leadership team of a new and ambitious Centre focusing on the safety of autonomous systems and artificial intelligence (AI). York has pioneered systems safety for decades, and is now at the forefront of research into the safety of AI and machine learning (ML), particularly in support of autonomous systems and robotics.

You will join a vibrant, high-performing and collaborative team where you will play a pivotal role in our long-term success, and build on York’s strong track record and international standing in systems safety. We are looking for someone with a deep commitment to -and track record of
- making real-world impact while working in a multidisciplinary team, where we value open and clear communications. Alongside your academic achievements, we are looking for someone with significant experience of research leadership, and of securing major investments.

**As part of your role you will**:

- work with external partners to deliver impact and facilitate uptake of research by industry, regulators and policy makers - with support to trial and embed novel models for delivery
- lead and carry out internationally outstanding and industrially-relevant research
- identify and secure external funding for innovation activities
- contribute to teaching, including continuing professional development (CPD)
- take on a leadership role in a new Centre, working alongside experienced colleagues

Over the last few years, we have secured over £40M of investment for strategic and linked activities including: the Assuring Autonomy International Programme, the Institute for Safe Autonomy, and most recently the UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in the lifelong safety assurance of AI-enabled autonomous systems.
