Assistant Policy Officer

Overview:
The post holder will work alongside Policy Officers to support them with certain projects, as well as lead on their own portfolio of discrete projects as they progress the career grades. The post holder will therefore be working closely with officers and senior managers across the organisation, elected members, and community organisations, partners, regional and national government departments in helping to shape corporate strategies and policies in order to support the council in meeting the needs of Harrow residents
About you:
This is a fast-paced role working across all council services and activities, in a dynamic and influential team. The successful applicant will have a positive, can-do approach to supporting the council deliver their priorities for Harrow. The post holder will enjoy collaborating with the team, finding solutions to problems, working in a creative manner whilst being agile, resilient, and highly motivated within a pressurised political environment
To be successful in this role you would need to:
- Work collaboratively across the team, the Council and with partner organisations to help build relationships and develop the corporate policy direction of the authority.
- Develop policy expertise around the council’s functions in the context of delivering the council’s key priorities and outcomes.
- Provide input and support to strategic policy advice, briefings, research analysis and support to the Chief Executive, Corporate Strategic Board, the Leader, Portfolio Holders, the Scrutiny Leadership Group and partnership groups.
- Demonstrate strategic thinking, strong intellectual capability and the ability to prioritise effectively to manage and coordinate a wide range of tasks that are complex and sensitive.
- Provide strong organisational skills to help drive forward the team’s work programme.
- Demonstrate a positive, can-do approach to supporting the council deliver its priorities for Harrow.
- Work across a diverse range of complex and strategic policy areas.
- Engage with the Chief Executive, Corporate Directors, Cabinet Members, Scrutiny Councillors and partners on a daily basis and therefore need to establish effective working relationships and generate their trust.
